Travel Insurance provides a range of benefits to ensure that if things do go wrong you are protected - from the simple replacement of lost luggage items to trip cancellation expenses or the potentially huge cost of overseas medical treatment. Read more at the travel insurance section of SmartTraveller.gov.au here
2 Passport
www.passports.gov.au
Check that your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond the period for which you are traveling.  Take a photocopy and leave it with a family member or friend.
3 Visa
http://www.dfat.gov.au/visas
Take a photocopy and leave it with a family member or friend.
4 International Drivers Permit
www.aaa.asn.au/touring/idp.htm
Not all car hire companies will accept a foreign drivers licence.  Contact your local Australian Motoring Association to find out more about the issuing of an International Driving Permit (IDP).
5 Tickets, Reservations and Itinerary Take photocopies of all important travel documents and reservation confirmations and leave them with a family member or friend.
6 Vaccinations
www.who.int/ith/
Check with your doctor prior to departure.
7 Medications Keep a list of all prescription drugs required whilst travelling and check with your doctor prior to departure.
8 Medicare Card
www.hic.gov.au
Medicare benefits are not available for treatment received overseas but Australia has reciprocal health care agreements with a number of countries.  These agreements do not replace the need for medical insurance for travel overseas.  Details are available at the Medicare page of the Health Insurance Commission site.

www.smarttraveller.gov.au
Check the Smart Traveller website prior to departure.
10 Mail Collection Have a friend collect your mail or ask the post office to hold it for you.
11 Deliveries Cancel any regular deliveries prior to departure.
12 Pay Bills Make sure all your bills are paid prior to departure.
13 Out of Office Assistant Have you put your out of office assistant on and diverted your phone?

15 Travellers Cheques and Local Currency Ensure you have some local currency on you when you arrive and depart from your destination in case any local arrival or departure taxes are payable.
