Fry's Assembly Hall in Gundagai was built in 1881 (almost 150 years ago) and was a beacon of entertainment to the Fry's Family Hotel across the road. It was within these walls that Gundagai's inaugural council meeting convened in 1889, marking the town's declaration as a municipality.

In 1932 Fry's Assembly Hall it began a new chapter as TW Irwin's Garage, later becoming Hume Motors under the stewardship of Mrs EG Winnett from 1956. The building's versatile nature saw it morph into a hub for plumbing and appliance retail under T & J Wells.

Perhaps one of its most illustrious moments came in February 1905, when it played a crucial role in the Dunlop Reliability Motor Contest. Orchestrated by Dunlop's Henry Barton James, this grueling journey from Sydney to Melbourne covered 572 miles and marked Australia's foray into major motorsport events, being only the fourth of its kind globally. Fry's Assembly Hall, with its spacious interiors, transformed into a makeshift garage for the trials, hosting 23 cars, 17 of which triumphantly reached the finish line.

This historic event was immortalised by none other than the famed Australian poet, 'Andrew Banjo' Patterson, who, in his capacity as a journalist for the Sydney Evening Times, chronicled the trials and found respite at Fry's Family Hotel.

Today, a solitary petrol bowser stands opposite the hall, a silent homage to an era when automobiles were less fuel-efficient and Gundagai's main street was dotted with garages. This quaint town, with its strategic location as a midway point on the Hume Highway and a crossing over the Murrumbidgee River, continues to charm visitors with tales of yesteryear, inviting them to wander through the pages of its history.
