Broken Hill in New South Wales is Australia's first heritage listed city. With its rich history and inspiring attractions, it is a great place to learn about the outback and Australian culture. Broken Hill has often been referred to as The Silver City because of its long involvement in the mining industry. Large quantities of silver, lead, and ore were found here. Although mines still operate in the city, it is increasingly becoming known as an art district. With more than 50 artists, many art galleries and studios have opened in the past years.
Main attractions in and around the city include The Living Desert Reserve, The Silver Trail, Broken Hill Heritage Trail, Menindee Lake System, and Kinchega National Park. Don’t forget to watch a sun set in the outback. The best place to do this is the Mundi Mundi Lookout which is located just out of town. Exxperience being in the mines by going on one of the mining tours. The Daydream Mine on the road to Silverton is the best place for this.
