The pace, the slopes, and the camaraderie of skiing make the sport pretty magical. To some people, skiing is an experience that cannot be improved upon. But those people haven’t tried skiing while listening to music. Yes, the sport you love is about to get better, because we’ve put together a playlist of some of the best skiing songs to accompany you down the mountain. While some people enjoy the sounds of the snow, not many turn back once they’re had a day of skiing with music. [tweet_dis]Step into your skis and turn the music up – this is going to be one awesome day on the slopes.[/tweet_dis]
1. The XX – Intro
You’ve waited all summer to hit the slopes, and now the moment’s finally here. This reflective, atmosphere-building song will get you pumped and ready for action as you travel up the chair lift. It’s going to be a great day.
2. Red Hot Chili Peppers – Can’t Stop
Now let’s really pick things up. The slow build up of Can’t Stop will raise your anticipation as you prepare to dip over the edge of the first run. You’re now exactly where you need to be – carving the slopes and gathering speed as you listen to an awesome track. ‘Ever wonder if it’s all for you?’ Today, it is. Also, make sure you CAN stop before you start skiing – you’ll have much more fun.
3. Alabama Shakes – Always Alright
It’s fun to hit some top speeds when you’re skiing, but that’s not what the sport is about – skiing is about having fun. Take your time as you work your way down this run – you’re in no rush. This laid back Alabama Shakes track will be just what you need as take another smooth, meandering trip down the mountain.
4. Vampire Weekend – White Sky
OK, we’ll be honest: we included this track because a ‘White Sky’ is what you’ll be hoping for over the mountain before your trip. That is, a white sky with snow falling softly (if that wasn’t obvious…). The weather really is an underrated component of skiing. The best possible scenario is a bright blue sky day after a night of falling snow. Ah, perfect. If we could do it for you, we would, every time. We’re good like that.
5. Nero – Me and You
Stand on the top of the mountain and take in your surroundings. Quite a view, hey? Nero’s Me and You is going to get you pumped in a way that few other songs can. You’re about to plunge over the edge and show everyone what you’ve got. Are you ready? With this sweeping, soaring tune filling your head, we think you are.
6. The Gaslight Anthem – 45
The Gaslight Anthem’s 45 is all about power. Fast paced and atmospheric, you might find that you go a little faster down the hill when you’ve got this blaring from your headphones. This song kicks in straight away, so it’s especially good for short runs when you have no time to waste with slow introductions.
7. Two Door Cinema Club – What You Know
We don’t want to tire you out, so we’re trying to alternate between fast songs and chilled songs. What You Know by Irish band Two Door Cinema Club is somewhere between the two: you’ll have enough pace to fly around all the interesting corners, but you’ll also have the time to take in your surroundings.
8. AC/DC – Back in Black
We’ll always find a place for AC/DC in our playlists. This hard and terrific track is about celebration – about cutting loose and following your dreams. Now you’re just where you need to be – on a mountain, skiing. It’s time to strut your stuff on the slopes in style, with one hell of a soundtrack.
9. Bob Marley and the Wailers – Three Little Birds
Wow, this is a change of pace. Switching from AC/DC to Bob Marley would cause whiplash in most settings, but not on the mountain. You just know everything little is gonna be alright when you’re skiing with friends and family. Glide down the slope in a blissed out, contented state as you listen to good ol’ Bob’s rhythmic reggae.
10. Fleetwood Mac – Go Your Own Way
Do you know what ski lifts are for? Talking with friends and family. When you’re at the top, you’re not tied to anybody. See an interesting route you just have to ski? Say sayonara to your friends and go your own way. They’ll understand back on the chairlift when you tell them about the awesome new run you found.
11. Wolfmother – Joker and the Thief
Time for some Australian hard rock! Wolfmother have gained plenty of fans for their hard yet melodic sound. Joker and the Thief, a track from the band’s first album, has all the pace and aggression needed for a powerful run. Again, expect to go 10% faster than usual when you’ve got this one on play.
12. Empire of the Sun – Walking on a Dream
More whiplash, sorry. This chilled song from Empire of the Sun (also from Sydney) is the ideal song to play when you’re skiing on a warm and sunny day. I know we all think of cold weather and snow when we think of skiing, but really, the best days are when you can hit the slopes in a t-shirt and shorts. In those conditions, Walking on a Dream will be your go to song.
13. Jet – Are You Gonna Be My Girl
Fast paced, hard songs will always perform well on the slopes. Leave the acoustic tracks and ballads until you’re hovering around the fire at your lodge or hotel – it’s songs like Jet’s Are You Gonna Be My Girl that invoke the spirit of skiing life. Cool, simple, powerful.
14. The Clash – I Fought the Law
Ah, those songs that build and build and then unleash an awesome wave. They’re the best. That’s just what you get with The Clash’s I Fought the Law. See that small but steep run over there? This is the track that will A. give you the courage to ski it, and B. make it even more fun than it already is.
15. Passion Pit – Sleepyhead
It’s getting to the end of the day, so it’s time to chill out a bit. Nobody has the energy for the long and fast runs anymore, so let’s just work our way down to a good beat. You’ll be upright and upbeat as you carve to Passion Pit’s Sleepyhead. This has been a great day – now it’s time to start thinking about the fun you’re going to have tonight.
16. Idina Menzel – Let it Go (Frozen)
We thought long and hard about including this song. While we wouldn’t listen to it, we know that plenty of people out there who, erm… oh, who cares? We love it. But really, we’re actually including this for a legitimate reason. Skiing is all about embracing the best of winter, and we can’t think of a song that better encapsulates the spirit of winter than Let it Go. You’ve had an awesome day on the slopes with friends and family – crack open those beers and get a singalong going, you’ve earned it!
