How to get a library-like experience for your next hotel stay
There are several layers of defence to getting a quiet hotel room starting from when you arrive at reception, just ask for a quiet room away from elevators, possibly on a higher floor with less chance of hearing noise from floors above and the street below. From the hotel’s point of view one of the most effective ways to keep guests happy who request a hotel room with soundproofing or a quiet hotel room is to put those guests together in one particular area of the hotel.
Once you are in your room if there is a noise that is bugging you then let reception know straight away so they have the chance to get you another room. Sometimes the noise won’t be apparent straight away and moving rooms after you have settled in becomes a bit more difficult for you and the hotel. In this case ear plugs are great to help block noise while you are working or just sleeping.
Another great way to block noise is to play some music of your choice or just calming background music in your room. Noise cancelling headphones are an option which can really make your hotel room sound like a library. The Bose QC or Quiet Comfort range of “wearable technology” pretty much sets the standard for noise cancelling headphones. Sony is another brand which does a good job at noise cancelling headphones and is generally cheaper than Bose. Bose generally charges a very noticeable premium for it’s noise cancelling headphones. The QC20s are easy to pack because they are small, they have a great battery life which Bose claims is 16 hours. You can sleep on your side with the Bose QC20s in your ears, it’s a little hard but it’s possible with a soft pillow. Sleep with the QC20s in your ears works great on long haul flights too. Now the Bose QC20s do have wires that is true, but what happens when the battery runs out when you are travelling and re-charging is not that convenient? How do hotels usually deal with noise complaints?
If you call reception with a noise complaint, most hotels will respond and ask noisy guests to be quiet for you, particularly if it’s late at night (after midnight for example). Occasionally, if a wedding party is continuing at the hotel for example you might be asked if it’s ok to move rooms away from the noisy guest, a little inconvenient but effective if you want to get some sleep. If the hotel can’t stop the noisy party or offer an alternative to get away from the noise then a partial refund or complimentary upgrade on your next stay is not uncommon. Some hotel chains have a satisfaction guarantee which extends as far as refunding you, Hampton Inn by Hilton for example goes as far as saying “If you are not satisfied, we do not expect you to pay”.
