Goody-two-shoes, goth, geek or jock—what were you in high school? Whether we were the type to ‘forget’ our PE gear, or the dog always ate our essays, there was always one class we loved at school, and not always because the teacher was a hottie. Head back to your days of innocence (at least that’s what you told the headmaster) on a favourite school subject holiday. From writing to cooking, and running to lab tests, you’ll have a giggle down the back and pass with flying colours without all that stressful exam mumbo-jumbo. Now hurry up and come inside, the bells ringing…
If the library was your favourite hang-out at school, then grab your pen and reading glasses for a lively bookworm fest at the Brisbane Writers Festival from 1–5 September. You can pull up a chair and listen to the experiences of national and international authors, network in the open-air tent and get an idea of the different genres of food writing, art analysis and fiction. Who knows, maybe next year you’ll be the one speaking! Come back to the Brisbane Riverview Hotel to be inspired by the water views and relax with some bubbles at the bar.

If you’re an astronomer, take a peek at the mini planetariums, and for biologists, there are native animals (for viewing only!). Try to name as many plants as you can in the landscaped courtyard of the Majestic Old Lion Apartment Hotel Adelaide then go back to your room to watch some documentaries on pay TV (or a trashy sci-fi flick on the DVD player!).

Fresh air vs chalkboard classrooms—for some of us phys ed was the best part of the school day, and not just to impress the chicks or check out the strutting peacocks. For the fitness nuts who carried on beyond graduation, you can run Forrest run in the Sun Herald City to Surf fun run in Sydney on 8 August.
Surely this has to be the most picturesque 14km courses in the world, with around 57,000 entrants weaving along through the Eastern Suburbs to beautiful Bondi beach—some in fancy dress, and all while raising money for charity. There’s no need for parking stress on the big day—stay at Menzies Sydney Hotel in the city centre and indulge in some post-race decadence: a muscle relaxing sauna and spa followed by dinner at the boutique Parkside restaurant with its stunning view and chandeliers.

Your teacher may have shaken their head at the amount of burned tea towels and stolen cooking chocolate, but these days it’s trendy to take cooking seriously…fun. At the Taste of Melbourne festival from 26–29 August you can check out non-flammable chefs and their gourmet signature dishes on sample size plates.
Best yet, they offer advice at the Chef’s Table area where you can learn how to create a masterly meal and then buy up on gourmet produce from the Yarra Valley.
