Formed in May 2007, the Friends of Cheltenham and Regional Cemeteries Inc. is a not-for-profit community group which aims to raise the profile of the Cheltenham cemeteries as places of local, state and national importance.


Our motto is "research, restore, remember". We do this by:

* Restoring gravesites by raising funds through close links with interested parties and other stakeholders;

* Remembering the contribution of those from our past by running regular walking tours.



Originally named the "Mordialloc and South Moorabbin General Cemetery", eight acres of land fronting Charman Road was reserved and the first interment took place on 27 March 1865 with the burial of John Fullerton Hunter. A portion of the Cemetery was later excised in the 1880s for the railway line to Mordialloc. In 1882, an additional two acres was added.


The Cheltenham Pioneer Cemetery is the final resting place of many local pioneers and identities as well as two indigenous Australians. Our popular tours are the result of many hours of painstaking research to bring to life long forgotten stories of everyday Melburnians. The Heidelberg School was the first significant art movement in Australia. The Heidelberg School Artists Trail extends over 40 kilometres through parks, villages and designated bike/walking paths in the municipalities of Banyule and Manningham and the Shires of Nillumbik and Yarra Ranges.


It includes a total of 57 colour, interpretative signs which follow the history of internationally recognised artists including Arhtur Streeton, Tom Roberts and Louis Buvelot.


The signs include reproductions of some of the artists most famous pieces and a description of the works, located in or near where the artists painted or lived.


This allows visitors to experience not only how the artists interpreted the landscape, but also how the landscape may have changed since the artworks were produced.


The Trail is ideal for art lovers, walkers, school groups - and anyone who is interested in our region's rich cultural heritage.

You will play a hands on role in the monitoring of small mammal populations in remote locations within this spectacular and much loved national park. You will work in small groups, alongside a Parks Victoria Ranger to check traps and collate data.


To date, the project has helped small mammals in Western Victoria threatened by fox predatation and bushfire including the nationally vulnerable Long Nosed Potoroo and Heath Mouse, and the nationally endangered Southern Brown Bandicoot.

Based on Venetian boat plans and built in Melbourne, our gondolas are a luxurious way to cruise the river. The Werribee Park Sculpture Walk is situated within the magnificent grounds of Werribee Park and showcases an interesting and challenging collection of work by Australia's leading sculptors all year round.


Winning works from the annual Helen Lempriere National Sculpture Award, held from March to May in Werribee Park's spectacular formal gardens, formulated the beginnings of the exhibition in 2000. These works have been combined with an impressive selection of finalist pieces from previous Lempriere Awards and together offer an outstanding sculptural experience. The entire exhibition has been made possible with support from the Helen Lempriere Bequest, which was established to honour the philanthropic aspirations of the late Helen Lempriere and her husband Keith Wood while creating new opportunities for artistic excellence in Australian sculpture.


The Sculpture Walk meanders through various areas of Werribee Park, an outstanding cultural and heritage property which offers an authentic insight into Australia's richly diverse history.
