Port Fairy is part of the Moyne Shire region which in turn is part of one of the largest volcanic plains in the world. Five minutes drive east of Port Fairy is Tower Hill Reserve, this is the volcanic remains of a nested maar volcano and is an area of significant geological interest.


Nearby at Macarthur the dormant volcano Mt Eccles forms the nucleus of a National Park with lovely walking tracks, a beautiful crater lake and an abundance of koalas.


Camping is allowed in the park for a nominal fee. If gem fossicking is of interest then fossick at the Mount Shadwell Quarry for the semi precious stone olivine which is also known as peridot.
