There's an unusual attraction on Phillip Island, in Victoria, that is certainly making people's heads turn. All who drive the Phillip Island Road can't help but be mystified by the Giant Purple Tap that seemingly floats in mid air, whilst gushing out thousands of litres of water into an apparently Flooded House.

Right from the moment you enter the property there are things that catch your eye and trick your brain. Starting with the Flooded House and the worlds' largest backwards clock you know you are in for an experience that is like no other. You can get your head chopped off, be shrunk to half your size, get lost in the mirror maze or outdoor maze, fall off a cliff or zoom along on the flying boogie boards. There is a long list of things to do, problems to solve and places to go.

The maze itself, is one Australia's largest, takes an average of 45 minutes to complete. When you have finished getting lost why not tackle the stimulating 19 hole maxi mini-golf course. After all the excitement you can browse in Victoria's most unique puzzle and games shop, or take a breather in the Puzzle Café, Gelato and Lolly Shop or Chocolate Café. The Alpine National Park stretches from central Gippsland all the way to the New South Wales border where it adjoins Kosciuszko National Park. Within the park are some of Australia's most stunning alpine landscapes, including mountain peaks, escarpments and grassy high plains.

There are plenty of opportunities for bushwalking, from hikes to plunging waterfalls or the summits of Victoria's highest peaks - Mount Feathertop, Mount Bogong and Mount Howitt - to the network of tracks among the Snow Gums, summer wildflowers and historic mountain huts of the Bogong High Plains.

Howard Anderson established Anderson Winery in 1993, after notching up 30 years experience in the industry - including 15 years as Winemaker at Seppelt Great Western. In 2005 he was joined by his daughter Christobelle, who had completed a Winemaking degree in Adelaide, and worked for wineries in several regions in France.


They are unashamed perfectionists, and take a "no compromise" approach to everything from the vineyard, to winemaking, to customer service. All wines are made on site, entirely by Howard and Christobelle. Their eight hectare vineyard is planted on Rutherglen's traditional Buckshot clay soil, and is non-irrigated which ensures a low yield of intensely flavoured grapes.


Traditional, labour intensive methods including hand harvesting, basket pressing and minimal additives are used alongside modern knowledge to ensure maximum wine quality. They specialise in full bodied reds (particularly Shiraz, Durif and Petit verdot) with intense inky colour, full rich mouthfilling fruit, and big soft tannins so that they are approachable when young, but will richly reward those who choose to cellar them.


The other house specialty is traditionally made white and red sparkling wines. Like the great vintage wines of Champagne, they cellar all their sparklings on yeast lees in the bottle for several years before disgorgement (removal of the yeast) and release, which gives them an extra dimension of complexity, and a lovely smooth, creamy texture.

In a postcard setting on the banks of Birch's Creek at Smeaton, Anderson's Mill stands as a powerful reminder of an industry that flourished after the gold rush of the 1850's. Standing today much like it was over 100 years ago, the five-storey bluestone building and its magnificent iron water wheel are still in place. Anderson's Mill is located in Smeaton, north of Creswick, in an area well known for it's fertile volcanic soils and goldmining past.

Construction of the flour mill commenced in 1861 and it was operational within six months. The Oat section of the Mill was completed by the following harvest. Outbuildings such as the stables, grain store and bluestone office were added later as the operation expanded.

The water wheel was developed from designs by John Smeaton and the patterns cast locally in Ballarat at Hunt and Opie's Victoria Foundry. Water was collected from Hepburn Lagoon, about five kilometres from the Mill, then released into Birch Creek before being channelled into the water race to turn the wheel.

The amount of water required depended on the product being processed. The person operating the release gates at Hepburn Lagoon would be asked to release 'half oats water' or 'full flour water' for the shift's operation.

'Dating back to the 1860s, the Andraos Brothers' Olde Winilba vineyard and impressive two-storey bluestone cellars have been replanted and restored. Shiraz can be powerful, incredibly rich, and multi-layered - it is not surprising to learn this wine has won gold medals and trophies. There's also a rich and concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon, good Pinot Noir, and a very characterful Chardonnay.' Ben Canaider.

Nestled on the southern fringes of the Macedon Ranges is Sunbury's oldest and most respected winery, Olde3 Winiba; or as it is known today, Andraos Bros. Steeped in heritage dating back to the 1860's its gentle eastern slopes and rich volcanic soils produced award-winning wines in Australia and overseas. Olde Winiba received a new lease on life in 1989 when the Andraos family replanted its soils to produce some of the regions most highly awarded and sought after wines, especially the Grandfather's Reserve Shiraz. Private and group tastings are offered in the vineyard's beautifully restored bluestone Cellar and Estelle's Cellar Restaurant completes the experience with old-fashioned service, elegant decor and gourmet delights.

Angledean is a large mud brick studio situated in the rolling hills of beautiful Bellbrae.

This working studio has been producing high quality hand thrown stoneware pottery for over twenty years. In recent years the artisans have also been working in art glass creating beautiful pieces of contemporary fused glass and jewellery.

All the original works are for sale and have been created in the studio by the artisans. Angledean studio is located 700 meters from Anglesea road and just two kilometres north of the Great Ocean Road roundabout intersection in Bellbrae.

The Anglesea Art House is a venue for members to work. Weekly classes are held in watercolour, life drawing, oil, and acrylic medium. A pottery shed, with electric wheels, gas and electric kilns are also available.

A printing machine is also available, with a weekly printing group working with etchings, collagraphs, lino cuts and the like.

A weekly mosaic group also meets. Weekend workshops, in different mediums, are held when required.

Members also display and sell their work from the Art House. A variety of craft is also displayed and sold, including jewellery, felting, mosaics postcards, aprons, dolls clothes, bags etc.

The Anglesea Golf Club is situated on the Great Ocean Road and is an undulating 6,074m Par 73 layout set in natural bushland. A feature of the course is the number of elevated greens that require plenty of thought when selecting your club. There are only 42 bunkers throughout the course which have been likened to sand-belt bunkers and coupled with eucalypt tree lined fairways combine to produce a stimulating round. Also there is the ever present resident population of Eastern Grey Kangaroos which number approximately 300.

The kangaroos generally come down towards the Clubhouse of an evening so visitors having a drink on the balcony or dining in our bistro have the unique experience of seeing Australian Wildlife in a natural setting.

Located north of Cardinia Reservoir, Aura Vale Lake plays a very important role in Melbourne's water supply. The lake forms part of a drainage system designed to channel run-off water from neighbouring properties and roads, and stop it entering the main reservoir. This system prevents polluted water from affecting the quality of our drinking water.

Over the past years Aura Vale Lake Park has become a popular venue for boating activities including sailboarding and canoeing and for other small non-powered boats up to 3.3 metres. Swimming is not permitted due to poor water quality and submerged objects.

The Australian Tapestry Workshop is regarded as a world centre for one of Western civilisation's oldest and richest art forms.

Based in South Melbourne, the Workshop is one of only a small number of organisations in the world and boasts an international reputation for the freshness, vitality and technical excellence of its hand-woven tapestries.

Over 400 contemporary tapestries have been created since it was established in 1976.

Unique in its philosophy of an integrated approach to creating artworks, in which artists and weavers collaborate as equals, the Workshop's emphasis on working with living artists has led to many significant collaborations including Arthur Boyd, Jon Cattapan, David Noonan, John Olsen, Jorn Utzon, Susan Norrie, Emily Kngwarray and Angela Brennan as well as an extensive range of international artists.

Every year about 10 million people see a tapestry created by the Workshop. They hang in a range of public buildings and private collections around the world hotel lobbies, boardrooms, chapels, schools and hospitals, the foyers of performing arts centres and gallery complexes, in Australia's Houses of Parliament and selected embassies and high commissions around the world.

A tapestry is never simply an imitation of an artwork in another medium. Fine artists in their own right, the weavers blend the old and the new. Working by hand in the traditional 14th Century Gobelin style but with modern looms, they translate and interpret using specially spun Australian wool dyed in-house with a palette of 366 colours to create entirely new contemporary artworks.

Due to the Workshop's efforts and achievements over the past 34 years, tapestry is now highly regarded by artists and collectors alike as a stand-alone contemporary art form and an important artistic tradition in today's modern times.

Avalon Raceway first opened in the summer of 1976 which saw the dream of brothers Doug and Norm Drew come true. Both had been active drivers around the region and with the closure of Torquay Speedway saw the Drew Family build the Speedway on the land in Old Melbourne Road, Lara. Since that time the family have strived to improve the venue and along the way have created a number of Blue Ribbon Events that are nationally recognised.

The early years saw Solo and Sidecars as the major drawcard attracting world champions Ole Olsen, Barry Biggs, Ivan Mauger, along with touring English Lions teams and European champions battle with legendary Phil Crump, while the sidecar action was nothing short of incredible with an Australian Championship and numerous Victorian Titles contested with the introduction of more clay content in the early 90's saw the demise of bike racing and the emergence of Sprintcar Racing which today Avalon Raceway holds a number of events which are highly rated on the national scene.

These include the newly created Invitational Jackpot, the Presidents Cup, World Series Sprintcars and Round One of the Easter Trail. Avalon also hosts major events for its other classes as well. The K Rock Cup a major Super Sedan Show, West Coast Classic, Victoria's longest running Modified Production Feature plus major events for V8 Dirt Modifieds, Street Stocks, Speedcars and AMCA'.

B'darra Estate is nestled in the warm flats of Moorooduc on the Mornington Peninsula. A ten minute drive from Frankston or Mornington.


The winery opened in June 2006 and offers a variety of wines including sauvignon blanc, pinot gris, chardonnay, pinot noir, merlot, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, muscat and a unique dessert wine made from raspberries. They also offer a new style of unoaked cabernet sauvignon.

The 2004 Shiraz and 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon have been awarded gold medals and the Raspberry dessert wine a trophy as well as gold and silver medals for best berry fruit wine at the Australian Fruit Wine Show.

Ba Ba Lu Restaurant & Bar offers all day service Breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as coffee and a delicious selection of homemade pastries and cakes.

The entire menu is available takeaway including fresh juice, coffee and smoothies. The food is all made on site and where available local and organic produced is used. Children are also catered for and gluten free and vegetarian options are available.

February sees the comeback of Sunday night Paella, this seafood dish is cooked for all to see in the dining room.

With the food there is something for the ears with live music consisting of latin, reggae and funk. There's Someone new every week. Keep an eye out for wine dinners, bands, cabaret and comedy dinners. Be sure to book. The full a la carte menu is also available.

A visit to Lorne would not be complete without a visit to Ba Ba Lu. Located at the Paris end of Lorne, just on the river, at Erskine river.

Bacchus Hill Winery offers a complete country winery experience. It has a warm welcoming and relaxed family atmosphere. They have excellent award winning wines; traditional slow cooked and modern meals; home grown and home made provender products and we conduct winery tours at different times of the year.

Their Italian heritage ensures that there is an added dimension to their product and services. The extensive range of cool climate wines are made with passion and attention to detail by Bruno Tassone our winemaker. Their Son Mark, is the head Chef, and his passion is to create dishes using their house grown products including free range pork, goat, chickens and eggs, whilst incorporating their wines, ciders, vinegars and provender products. Themed Dinners, like Carnevale, Winemaker's and Spring Degustation are his specialty.

The location is on a major tourist route off the Western Highway in Bacchus Marsh, and is less than 50 minutes from the GPO of Victoria's three largest cities, Melbourne, Ballarat, and Geelong. The cellar door is easy to find, the tourist will first enjoy a short two kilometre drive on a gently winding country road leading to the cellar door and it enjoys spectacular, unparalleled panoramic views of the Bacchus Marsh valley patchwork of market gardens, orchards, Mt. Baileys of Glenrowan offers 'Real Australian Heritage in a Bottle'.Established in 1870, Baileys of Glenrowan is one of the oldest wineries in the north-east and produces a stylish range of predominantly red and fortified wines. Established in 1969 by local pharmacist and winemaking legend, Stuart Anderson, Balgownie Estate was the first boutique vineyard to be planted in the Bendigo district in more than 80 years.


The 70's and 80's are often reminisced over by those that would drive up from Melbourne for their allocation of the big full-flavoured reds, renowned for their exceptional ageing qualities.


From these artisan beginnings, the 'Balgownie' name quickly gained a reputation for it's award winning wines both in Australia and overseas. Even the Queen, on a stately visit, got to have a wee sample of the 1975 and 1976 Cabernet Sauvignon.


Today, Balgownie Estate boasts two vineyards and cellars: Bendigo, with predominantly old vine Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz as well as small parcels of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and now the cool climate Yarra Valley with the regionally distinctive varietals of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

The Ballaarat Astronomical Society was founded in 1958 on the initiative of members of the Astronomical Society of Victoria. Since then it has been custodian of the Ballarat Municipal Observatory, which was established in 1886 through the generosity of James Oddie, sometimes referred to as 'the father of Ballarat'.

Various activities are available on Friday evenings including telescope making, observing and computing.

The Observatory is open to the public every Friday and Saturday night from half an hour before sunset and viewing is available if the sky is clear.

Open nights for the public are held from time to time, especially if there is a special astronomical event (eclipse, comet, Mars close approach etc). These open nights are advertised in the Ballarat Courier newspaper and sometimes on regional radio.

Membership is open to anyone over the age of 10. Apart from joining in all Society activities, members are entitled to the use of the extensive facilities of the Society, including telescope training, use of the Library, and to borrow the Society's lending telescopes.

Visits by school groups, clubs and community groups can be booked in advance. Please phone the Observatory.

Telescope making has been a major activity throughout the life of the Society. Countless numbers have been launched on this path under expert guidance. In addition to hand grinding and polishing there is also an optical bench permanently set up.

Constructing a powerful optical telescope is within the capability of anyone with the interest to try. Some members spend time building parts of their telescopes on Friday evenings. Materials and advice are available to those who would like to try constructing their own instruments.

At Ballarat Bird World, there are over two hundred Australian and foreign birds to see. It is a rare chance for Australian and overseas visitors to see the colours of Australian bird life.


Some of the birds on display are rarely seen in the wild.


Including many cockatoos like the Gang-Gang, Red, White and Yellow Tailed cockatoos.

Travel on part of Ballarat's Living History with the Ballarat Tramway Museum.

History lives in Ballarat and in Wendouree Parade. Take a ride on one of the 90 year old trams which provided Ballarat's main form of passenger service until 1971. The vintage tram ride covers 1.3km of original line through the beautiful Botanical Gardens by the western side of the tranquil Lake Wendouree and takes about 20 minutes.

The Ballarat Vintage Tramway is operated by the Ballarat Tramway Museum Inc., formed to keep alive the tramway experience that has otherwise disappeared from the streets of Ballarat.

The Museum is one of a few purely volunteer groups in the world operating tramcars on a public road and over a section of original track.

At the depot there is a museum display of photographs and tramway memorabilia for visitors. The tramcar fleet and workshops area can also be inspected.

The tramcar collection includes Ballarat Horse Tram No. 1, three Electric Supply Company of Victoria tramcar bodies, twelve tramcars which initially ran in Melbourne between 1913 and 1951, and three acquired directly from Melbourne by the Museum in 1975.

This award winning Park is owned and operated by Greg Parker and his family. Founded in 1985 through a passion for conservation of wildlife and the environment, the Parker family have long realised the value of allowing people and animals to come together in a relaxing, friendly and educational environment. The selection of animals is truly unique and features animals that can only be described as natural wonders of the world!

Children can experience close contact with koalas, wombats, kangaroos and even crocodiles. Ballarat Wildlife and Reptile Park houses a rich collection of Australian wildlife in 16 hectares of natural bushland.

Guided tours run every day at 11 am and weekend keeper shows from 1.30pm on Saturday and Sunday.

All wines are made on site in the small hands on facility. Banks Road also make wine for some of the other vineyards around area. They are very passionate about their wine and enjoy the closeness to their produce that being a small winery gives them.

From bud burst in the spring to bottling the wine, sometimes years later, they see each vintage evolve.

Their wines have received many accolades at shows and in reviews by wine writers.

Their recently completed cellar door is open from Thursday to Sunday 11.00am - 5.00pm or by appointment. As well as tasting each of the wines you can enjoy a light lunch and a glass of wine whilst enjoying the view over the vineyard to the Rip.

The open space, playgrounds and picnic areas of Banksia Park make it a popular location with visitors of all ages. The park is perfect for cyclists, joggers, walkers and those who enjoy a breath of fresh air.

Heritage
In 1841, a punt was installed on the Yarra River at the site of the bridge at Banksia Park. It opened the best route between Melbourne and the Bulleen-Templestowe area enabling the earliest Europeans to settle along the rich river flats. Banksia Park was the first part of the Yarra Valley Parklands to be opened to the public in 1978.

Barangaroo Boutique Wines is located just outside the Grampians but within the Grampians touring region in Victoria, just 10 minutes from Horsham and an interesting day trip from Halls Gap.

The winery is a busy place in March when the vintage comes in. All the wine grapes are hand picked with special tender care given to each bunch to prevent bruising. These grapes are then gently crushes before being fermented in open vats with commercial yeast.

When fermentation is complete the skins are pressed off to allow juice to be placed into barrels. Oak as well as containers with oak staves are used to impart the necessary nuances to the wine.

Meanwhile the wine that has matured for 12 to 18 months in oak have been bottled and stored ready for sale from the cellar door or retailed from specially selected outlets locally.

The cellar door has an entrance from the car park to the west, the side where Mt Arapiles stands boldly.

The landscaped outdoor area has a native and Tuscan feel with rendered walls and a pond.

On warmer days the outdoor seating is ideal under the shade of the vine trellis.

Currently the cellar door is open weekends and public holidays and at other times by appointment. Just call up ahead of time to organise a tour.

The Vineyard is located on a high ridge overlooking a timbered creek. To the south east is the Grampians in the distance and to the west is the spectacular Mt Arapiles.

Barmah National Park, together with the adjoining Millewa forest in New South Wales, forms the largest River Red Gum forest in the world. The complex ecology of the forest is closely linked to the Murray River and its flooding regime, creating a diverse natural habitat for a variety of wildlife, particularly waterbirds.

Barmah is a great spot for camping. Days can be easily filled with fishing, horse riding, bushwalking, swimming and canoeing.

How to Get There
Barmah National Park lies along the Murray River between the towns of Barmah and Strathmerton, about 225km north of Melbourne. Access to the 12 major entrance gates is available from the Moira Lakes Road, Barmah-Picola Road, and the Murray Valley Highway.

The Barrgowan Vineyard and Winery is owned and operated by Dick and Dib Simonsen. Vines were planted in 1994 with the objective of producing a high quality Shiraz for private consumption. This specialisation in Shiraz continues and the high quality is reflected in an impressive list of awards since 1998.

The production is very small from the 1/2 acre of vines, 50 cases in 2003 rising to an expected 200 cases in 2010 with no plans to expand further. This will ensure the continued high quality and attention to detail.

The vineyard is unusual in that five different clones of Shiraz are planted, and Barrgowan Vineyard believe that each clone adds just a little extra complexity to the finished wine.

Barrgowan Vineyard hand prune the vines, hand pick the fruit and basket press manually. Diligence, care and gentleness are applied at all stages of the wine making process; for example, most wine transfer is achieved by gravity, not pumped. By scientific measurement during the wine making process, we ensure the absolute minimum use of additives. The overall criterion is quality, not quantity!

The wine matures for 12+ months in the best, ultra fine grained French oak barrels available, and do not blend, filter or fine.

Located near the mouth of Barwon River, Barwon Bluff Marine Sanctuary protects 17ha of predominately composed of reef.

The eastern half of the reef is basalt, formed from lava flow, and is exposed to the flow of the river. The western side is old sandstone and influenced by ocean swell. On the outer edges of the reef are the wrecks of two ships.

The variation in conditions across the reef results in the presence of a huge diversity of plants and animals.

Visitors can see anything from feather stars and barnacles to rock lobsters, rays and schools of fish. Bull Kelp, sandstone arches and sponge gardens create a fascinating and complex underwater world.

The Queenscliff shop opened its doors in 1995 and is located in a beautifully kept, heritage listed former Wesleyan Church. Built in 1868 the high ceiling and historic atmosphere create a charming environment in which to browse the wall to wall shelves when the weather's not so good for the beach.

Barwon Grange is an elegant intact brick home dating from Geelong's earliest residential settlement.

It was built in 1855 and reflects the aspirations of middle class businessman Jonathan Porter O'Brien and his family who had emigrated from Liverpool.

The picturesque Gothic style architecture includes steep gables, unusual decorative timber bargeboards and veranda parapet.

The interior contains a fine collection of early Victorian furniture and fittings faithfully accumulated according to an inventory compiled when the house was auctioned in 1856.

The garden complements the house with a Victorian fountain. Lawns sloping down to the Barwon River are planted with species from a mid-19th century plant catalogue. Self-guided garden walks are available.

Nestled amongst the coastal dunes and metres from the spectacular 13th Beach surf coast, the highly ranked Barwon Heads links course presents an enjoyable challenge for all golfers. Widely recognised as a private club, visitors who are members of other golf clubs are invited as green fee players, and to stay in the house.

Covering a substantial part of the Baw Baw Plateau and sections of the Thomson and Aberfeldy River valleys, Baw Baw National Park offers colourful wildflowers in early summer and open grassy plains with Snow Gum woodlands.

Mount St Gwinear, Mount Erica and the Baw Baw Alpine Village are ideal bases for bushwalking.

The Thomson River downstream of the Thomson Dam offers some of the best white water rafting in Victoria. Several tour companies provide rafting tours all year round.

In winter, the park is ideal for ski touring and has a variety of marked trails to suit the skills of skiers. Trails can be followed from the St Gwinear car park on to the plateau or further to the Baw Baw Alpine Resort.

The building chosen to accommodate the centre is an original 1850s building, built to house the Chinese Protector, within the Beechworth Heritage and Cultural Precinct.


The centre displays artefacts found on the site of the Chinese camps in Beechworth and other artefacts/items held by decedents of the Chinese miners who lived and worked on the Ovens and District goldfields.


The centre will also hold exhibitions, and events, in recognition of the contributions of the Chinese to the Beechworth district, and to the Colony of Victoria.

Built in 1857, Beechworth Gallery is one of the regions original buildings. Spanning three levels, including the cellar, the Gallery offers works of art from regional and international artists as well as a select range of items often sought but rarely found.

Over three levels of history you can enjoy, and purchase, works of art in a range of styles and mediums. Beechworth Historic Courthouse

One of Beechworth's most visited attractions the historic Courthouse is a beautifully preserved living history museum and the site of some of the dramatic events of gold era Australia, including the trial which sealed Ned Kelly's fate. Ned Kelly's mother Ellen was sentenced to three years gaol here and the fate of Elizabeth Scott, the first woman hanged in Victoria, was sealed in this building. Built in 1858 and in continuous service for 131 years, the Beechworth Courthouse retains its original furniture and fittings. Daily Courthouse tours are available to visitors.


Robert O'Hara Burke Memorial Museum

One of Australia's oldest museums, the Museum boasts a fascinating and historically significant collection of more than 30,000 individual items, many dating back to more than 150 years ago and some linked to famous and infamous figures of history such as Ned Kelly, Dame Nellie Melba and Robert O'Hara Burke. Highlights include an extensive collection of Aboriginal artefacts; Chinese, Goldmining, Natural History and Ned Kelly Collections and the 19th century Street of Shops.


Telegraph Station

Built in 1858, the Telegraph Station once linked the town to the outside world through the medium of Morse code.


Powder Magazine

Built in 1859 (restored by the National Trust in 1966) and of solid, buttressed granite, with a slate roof and surrounded by a high stone wall, the Powder Magazine was used as a storage room for large amounts of gunpowder used in mining and quarrying. By law, miners were required to leave bulk gunpowder in this building overnight.

People visit Beechworth for the natural beauty of the forests and ranges as well as the historical architecture of the town. It claims to be the best preserved gold town in Victoria with more than 30 of its buildings classified by the National Trust.

- The Beechworth Forest Drive begins from the town and passes through the peppermint forest near Lake Kerferd
- The 5 kilometre Gorge Scenic Drive, also a pleasant walk, provides views of waterfalls and rugged countryside west of the town. It also passes the restored powder magazine, built to safeguard mining explosives
- Other walking tracks connect Lake Sambell to Lake Kerferd, and a network of tracks link points of interest in the Gorge area including Fiddes Quarry, the precipice and cascades

Beleura, an Italianate mansion built by James Butchart in 1863. Once Victoria's official Government House, later the summer residence of Sir George Tallis and his family. Sir George headed arguably the greatest theatrical & entertainment empire the world has ever seen.
