Bligh Museum of Pacific Exploration Tours and Attractions The Bligh Museum is a privately-run history museum at Adventure Bay, Bruny Island. Bruny Island lies off the south coast of Tasmania and is accessed by a 15-minute car ferry from Kettering, 40 minutes south of Hobart (34 kilometres).
Built from thousands of convict-made bricks, the Bligh Museum of Pacific Exploration features a specialised collection relating to exploration in the South Pacific. A display of maps, documents, paintings and other artefacts offers an historical record of visits to Adventure Bay by explorers Captain William Bligh, Captain James Cook, Tobias Furneaux, Matthew Flinders and Admiral Joseph-Antoine Bruny D'Entrecasteaux. Notable works by Tobin, Webber and Hodges are also included in the collection. The Museum’s foundation stone was laid on 9th September 1955 – the 200th anniversary of Captain William Bligh's birth.
Tobias Furneaux—who accompanied Cook on a voyage of discovery in the HMS Adventure—landed in Adventure Bay in 1773. He replenished his food and water supplies before sailing to New Zealand. Captain James Cook landed at Adventure Bay in 1777. His sailing master, William Bligh, revisited the bay again in 1788, 1792 and 1809. Bligh and his botanist planted the first apple tree in Australia in 1788.

Bruny Island Neck , Bruny Island, Tasmania
Bruny Island Neck Tours and Attractions Bruny Island Neck is an isthmus of land connecting north and south Bruny Island, southern Tasmania. Located 40 kilometres/25 miles from Hobart, Bruny is Tasmania's fourth largest island, accessed by a passenger/vehicle ferry from Kettering.
The Neck is an important habitat for Bruny’s native wildlife, and here you’ll find the Neck Game Reserve. Boardwalks and viewing platforms enable you to observe short-tailed shearwaters and little penguins (also known as fairy penguins). You can see these remarkable birds returning to their burrows in the sand dunes at dusk—little penguins making their way up the beach in tight groups and the shearwaters gliding in from the sea. The Reserve has an interpretation board and during peak viewing times there is a Parks and Wildlife interpretation guide present at dusk. The best viewing period is during the warmer months—September to February.
Timber stairs lead from the dunes to the Neck lookout, offering stunning 360 degree views. You’ll find a memorial here to the indigenous Nuenonne people who lived on Lunnawannalonna (Bruny Island) before the European settlement of Bruny.
The Neck campground is just 20 metres from the beach and has several accessible, flat sites, car parking, picnic facilities and toilets.
Cape Bruny Lighthouse , Bruny Island, Tasmania
Cape Bruny Lighthouse Tours and Attractions On the heels of George Bass and Matthew Flinders, who in 1798 had established that there was a strait between Van Diemens Land and New South Wales, came the sealers. Soon ships en route from English and Indian ports were using the strait, but quickly experienced its dangers and decided it would be wiser to travel via the longer route and as a result Hobart became a popular calling place.
In 1835 three ships were wrecked in DEntrecasteaux Channel and consequently it was recommended to build a lighthouse at Cape Bruny.
The Cape Bruny lighthouse has kept vigil on the south-western edge of the cape on South Bruni Island since 1838 and was the third tower to be built, at a cost of 2,500 pounds, by convicts in Tasmania.
Take a guided tours of the lighthouse which are conducted, by prior arrangement, for a maximum of 5 adults or 6 people if children are included.
Channel Heritage Museum , Snug, Tasmania
Channel Heritage Museum Tours and Attractions The Channel Heritage Museum aims to promote and preserve the history of the Channel area from Margate south to Gordon.
There are displays of memorabilia and information on fruit growing, the 1967 bush fires, local schools, sporting teams, the scallop and fishing industry, timber industry, shipping in the Channel and many items used in everyday life in the early days of Channel settlement. The museum has a unique collection from the Electrona Carbide Works. A colonial style kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and washhouse depict home life in years past. There is a library with books, photographs, maps and newspaper clippings relating to the Channel.
The Museum is seen as being of special educational value for children and there are special programs for school groups by arrangement.
Group visits from community and tour groups are arranged and catered for. There is easy access for the elderly and disabled.
Cockle Creek/South West National Park , Cockle Creek, Tasmania
Cockle Creek/South West National Park Tours and Attractions Cockle Creek is a tiny seaside settlement on the edge of Tasmania’s Southwest national park. Cockle Creek is two hours’ drive south of Hobart (148 kilometres/92 miles) via Geeveston.
Sheltered among the tranquil coves of Recherche Bay, Cockle Creek has campsites and basic facilities, and there are a number of excellent walks. A short stroll around the foreshore takes you to a whale sculpture and interpretation sign explaining the bay’s whaling history. Continue to the Fishers Point Navigation Light and Pilot Station Ruins, or take the well-marked track to South East Cape for stunning cliff-top views of the Southern Ocean and Maatsuyker Island.
Cockle Creek was once a thriving settlement of over 2,000 people. The area’s rich human history is reflected in Aboriginal sites, abandoned tramways, gravestones and ruins. This is the entry point to the Southwest national park, in Tasmania’s Wilderness World Heritage Area. The South Coast Track – one of Tasmania’s great bushwalks, begins (or ends) here.
French explorer, Bruni D'Entrecasteaux sailed into Recherche Bay in 1792 on a botanical expedition. The remains of a garden planted by the French were found here in 2003, resulting in the creation of a reserve to protect the area.

No two holes here are the same and the natural hazards, including dams and creeks, make for an interesting round of golf. Green fees give you access to the course for the day and club and buggy hire are available—bookings for hire equipment are recommended. Change rooms and refreshments are also available.

The Dover Golf Club Inc is a public golf course in Tasmania’s far south. Dover is an hour south of Hobart (81 kilometres/50 miles), via the Huon Valley.
The Dover Golf Club, Australia's most southerly golf course, is a scenic, nine-hole course featuring undulating fairways and watered greens. You can play your round here while enjoying spectacular views over Esperence Bay to Bruny Island. Two greens are bunkered, there is a dam on the sixth fairway and the coastal winds can present an added challenge. Visitors to the course are welcome—you can perhaps join in the fun on the regular chicken run—and casual course fees are paid using an honour system.

Elsewhere Vineyard Tours and Attractions Elsewhere Vineyard overlooks the Huon River at Glazier’s Bay in Tasmania’s Huon Valley. Glaziers Bay is 50 minutes’ drive south of Hobart (70 kilometres/43 miles).
Established in 1984, Elsewhere is a 13-hectare (32 acre) vineyard producing pinot noir, chardonnay, riesling, and gewürztraminer grapes. Elsewhere’s range of wines includes their signature pinot noir, riesling, gewürztraminer and chardonnay in addition to a fine sparkling. Wines are also produced under the alternative label, Somewhere Else. You can make an appointment to tour the Vineyard, taste wines from the range, and make a selection for your own cellar.
To ensure high-quality fruit, Elsewhere Vineyard's yields are carefully managed to around six tonnes per hectare. The vineyard is dry grown and the vines are pruned and picked by hand. Elsewhere Vineyard’s still wines are crafted by acclaimed Tasmanian winemaker Andrew Hood.
Tasmania’s cool climate makes the state a prime wine-growing region. Tasmania has over 200 vineyards, producing more than 6,500 tonnes of grapes per year. The state’s long, sunny autumns create the perfect climate for growing intensely-flavoured chardonnay, pinot noir, gewürztraminer and riesling grapes.

You can see examples of fine timber furniture at the Southern Design Centre in Geeveston; visit the studio of potter John Martin at the Woodfired Pottery in Glen Huon and see quality Tasmanian art and craft at The Regnan’s Gallery at Peppermint Bay, near Woodbridge.

Fleurtys farm produces a significant proportion of Australia’s native pepper crop, which is grown, dried and packaged at the farm and sold under the Diemen Pepper label. Products include packaged berries and leaf, zesty oils and vinegars and spicy chutneys. The farm also grows Dutch iris for the mainland market, and operates an essential oil distillery.
Fleurty’s café is contained within an elegantly designed modern building, with views of the farm and surrounding forest. You can choose from the menu of fresh local produce, or enjoy a picnic pack with freshly baked savoury pastries, local wine and delicious cakes. After lunch, take a stroll around the farm or through the surrounding bush, or visit the farm shop to browse the selection of local products. Choose from the range of Diemen Pepper products or Tasmanian Essential Oils, Tasmanian wines and beers, Hill Farm preserves, Fudge A’Fare, Bruny Island cheeses and Gillespie’s Ginger Beer.
Fleurtys is named after convict sawyer Charles Fleurty, who lived in the area in the 1820s.
Forest and Heritage Centre , Geeveston, Tasmania
Forest and Heritage Centre Tours and Attractions The Forest and Heritage Centre is a forestry interpretation centre at Geeveston in southern Tasmania. Geeveston is 50 minutes south of Hobart (71 kilometres/44 miles) in the Huon Valley.
The Centre is comprised of four sections. The Forest Room presents displays of Tasmanian forest types, wildlife and past and present forest practices. Here, you can see how pioneer timber-getters lived and worked in the bush, learn about current forest management in Tasmania, and see demonstrations of woodturning in the mini-theatre. The Hartz Gallery features an exhibition of original paintings by John Lendis, which illustrate the story ‘Postcards From the Town That Disappeared’ by Cilia Lendis. The gallery also has a collection of antique wood working machinery, crafts and fine furniture by Tasmanian artists. You can browse in the Craft Shop for Tasmanian-made, native timber products, and there is also a Visitor Information Centre. You can also enjoy a number of accessible themed walks through the working forests surrounding the Centre.
The Tahune AirWalk and World Heritage-listed Hartz Mountains National Park are a short drive west of the Centre. The Forest and Heritage Centre was the winner of the 2004 Tasmanian Tourism Awards, General Tourism Services and 2005 General Tourism Award.

Grandview Vineyard , Birchs Bay, Tasmania
Grandview Vineyard Tours and Attractions The vineyard was recently purchased by Ryan Hartshorn, his sister Nicole Gilliver and their parents and was previously known as 2BudSpur. It has been renamed Grandview Vineyard to connect it with the family's other organic vineyard in Birchs Bay in the same southern wine region.
The home vineyard is certified organic and the new vineyard will be converted over the next few years as well. The family is well known in Tasmania for sheep milking and the production of gourmet sheep cheese. With their two vineyards they intend to establish their own organic winery within the next few years.

Hartz Mountains National Park , Geeveston, Tasmania
Hartz Mountains National Park Tours and Attractions Travel 13 kilometres west of Geeveston through extensive eucalypt production forests then take the narrow gravel road into the Hartz Mountains National Park. A range of walking tracks leads through subalpine woodlands to ice-carved crags, lakes and alpine moorlands. On clear days, there are superb views east to the sea and west further into the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. At any time of year the weather can change suddenly, so be prepared for cold conditions, even in summer.

The 3 hectare vineyard was established in 1988 on the site of an old gooseberry farm. If you cant get enough of the panoramic view, accommodation is available in a colonial-style homestead.

Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs Tours and Attractions Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs natural springs pool are 90 minutes’ drive south of Hobart.
Formed some 40 million years ago, these great dolomite caves were discovered in 1917 by timber workers. You can join a Parks and Wildlife guide on a 45-minute daily tour through the large cavern. You’ll discover spectacular subterranean formations including flowstone, stalactites, columns, shawls, straws, stalagmites and the unusual helictites. The Cave is spacious and well-lit and there are no narrow passages.
Tours operate hourly beginning at 10am (from September through April) and from 11am from the end of April to September (please phone for confirmation). Please purchase your tickets 20 minutes prior to the cave tour time as there is a five kilometre drive plus a five minute walk to get to the cave entrance.
Just five kilometres from the Cave entrance is the Hastings Cave Visitor Centre and Thermal Springs Pool. You can swim in the thermal pools, fed by a natural spring at around 28 degrees Celsius, surrounded by forest and ferns with a large picnic area and equipped with change rooms, showers and toilets.

Hastings Forest Drive Picnic Area Tours and Attractions The Hastings Forest Drive is a two-hour self-guided tour through Tasmania’s Southern Forests. The drive begins at Hastings Caves, 90 minutes south of Hobart (125 kilometres/78 miles).
The Hastings Forest Drive follows forestry roads from Hastings Caves to a picnic area near Dover, on the Esperance River. You can stop along the way to explore and view the forests and discover the area’s logging history. Informative signs are placed along the route and audio cassettes for your self-guided drive are available at the Geeveston Forest and Heritage Centre.
There are a number of short walks that you can do along the way. A highlight is the walk to Duckhole Lake, (one of Tasmania's Great Short Walks), a flooded sinkhole where you may hear the elusive lyrebirds that inhabit this area.
Relax at the end of your drive at the Hastings Forest Drive Picnic Area on the banks of the Esperance River, where you’ll find barbecues, picnic tables and toilet facilities.
Some areas of the Southern Forests have boom gates across the roads for public safety or security purposes. Keys to gain access or information on closed areas may be sought from Forestry Tasmania's Geeveston Office.
Herons Rise , Kettering, Tasmania
Herons Rise Tours and Attractions Herons Rise is a family-owned vineyard and holiday cottages at Kettering, in southern Tasmania. The Vineyard is located on hills overlooking the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, 30 minutes south of Hobart (34 kilometres/21 miles).
Established in 1984, Heron’s Rise Vineyard produces fine, cool climate Tasmanian wines including pinot noir, Rhine Riesling and Muller Thurgau—a German variety developed for colder climates. This variety produces an aromatic wine that develops tropical fruit characters with a little bottle age. The 2005 Heron’s Rise Muller Thurgau was awarded a bronze medal in the Tasmanian Wine Show.
You can taste the range of Herons Rise wines at the vineyard by prior arrangement and take home a bottle of the current vintage. Heron’s Rise also offers three self-contained cottages at the vineyard – the Studio Cottage, Clock Tower Cottage and Loft Cottage.

Established in 1993, Home Hill’s five-hectare (12 acre) vineyard is planted with pinot noir, chardonnay and sylvaner grapes. You can taste wines from the Home Hill collection at the cellar door, including the award-winning pinot noir and pinot noir reserve, sylvaner, unwooded chardonnay, reserve chardonnay, sparkling cuvee and a late harvest sticky.
Home Hill’s elegant rammed earth and glass building also houses the restaurant, which has a seasonal, a la carte menu based on the freshest Huon Valley produce. Glass walls enable stunning views of the vineyard, surrounding farmland and mountains. Home Hill also hosts regular live performances, including a resident pianist and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra Virtuosi.

The Huon Valley Golf Club is a private, 12-hole country course at Huonville, southern Tasmania. Huonville is 40 minutes’ drive from Hobart in the Huon Valley (48 kilometres/30 miles).
The Huon Valley Golf Club offers fully watered fairways and excellent greens. The generally flat layout is not without challenge and six extra tees provide a total of 18 holes. Competitions are held at the course each Saturday and visitors and groups are welcome. The farm, by the Huon River, starts the process with a bag of compost and ends with delectable treats. It produces more than five tonnes a week of white, honey brown, oyster and shiitake mushrooms - all available at the farm shop, on weekdays.
Tours, which must be pre-arranged, include the dark, humid growing rooms with bags stacked five high and pickers on ladders. Taste the end result in the visitor centre.

At the Regnan’s Gallery at Peppermint Bay, near Woodbridge, you can see displays of quality Tasmanian art and craft. Visit Enchanted Woods at Castle Forbes Bay to watch a local wood turner at work, or see the craftsmanship of local potter John Martin at the Woodfired Pottery in Glen Huon.
Ida Bay Railway , Lune River, Tasmania
Ida Bay Railway Tours and Attractions The Ida Bay Railway at Lune River, Tasmania is Australia’s southernmost narrow gauge tramway. Lune River is 90 minutes south of Hobart, near Southport.
The Ida Bay Railway was originally built to transport limestone from Ida Bay quarries to waiting ships in the Lune River Estuary and Deep Hole Bay. You can take a two-hour, 14-kilometre (nine-mile) return trip on a restored section of this historic line, riding in passenger carriages built on 1890s bogie flat wagons powered by 1940s Malcolm Moore locomotives.
Departing from Lune River station, you’ll travel through wildflower-dotted bushland and coastal heath. See the site of the once-thriving Ida Bay township and enjoy fantastic water views as you travel along the Lune River’s southern shore. Deep Hole Bay marks the line’s end where you’ll find a long, white sand swimming beach, accessible only by rail. This idyllic lunch spot has a picnic shelter, barbecue facilities and toilets. From Deep Hole Bay you can follow walking tracks to Southport Lagoon and Southport Bluff where you will find the King George III monument. 134 people lost their lives when this convict ship sank here in 1835.

Small quantities of high quality fruit are grown at the vineyard to produce fine wines made by a local winemaker.

Picton River/Tahune Tours and Attractions Take the Arve Road Forest Drive (C 631) beyond Geeveston for 30 km to reach the Tahune picnic and barbecue area on the banks of the Huon River. From here you can walk the banks of the Huon River past Huon pine trees at various stages of growth - some are more than 500 years old. The Tahune Airwalk, with its walkway through the forest canopy of King Billy pine, sassafras, myrtle and Celery top is across the road. From here you can also join a guided rafting tour which takes you on the Picton River and then through easy rapids and quiet reaches to the Huon River.
Scented Rose - The , Glaziers Bay, Tasmania
The Scented Rose features a display of David Austin Roses in Tasmania’s Huon Valley. Located on a hilltop overlooking the Huon River at Glaziers Bay, the Scented Rose is 50 minutes’ drive south of Hobart (70 kilometres/43 miles).
When you walk through the Scented Rose’s 1.2 hectare (three-acre) garden, you’ll breathe in the fragrance of a 30-metre (98 foot) border of David Austin Roses – a collection representing each Austin Rose currently available in Australia. The roses are intermingled with perennials and there are tapestry hedges of rugosa roses and a 70-metre (230 foot) rugosa rose hedge along the entrance driveway. Take the Rose Walk beneath five arches covered with old roses and clematis, with a massive display of Alberic Barbier forming a backdrop to the border. Other features include National Trust-classified topiary hedges, a 13-metre (43 foot), wisteria-draped pergola, and an informal park with thousands of daffodils, making a wonderful spring display.
You can take a guided walk or audio tour of the garden. Garden notes and maps are available and workshops in garden design, photography, pruning and cultivation can be arranged.

South Bruny National Park , Bruny Island, Tasmania

Access to Bruny Island is a 20-minute crossing by vehicular ferry from Kettering, 35 minutes' drive south of Hobart. From November to April each year the short-tailed shearwaters arrive to mate and breed along the shore before heading out on their heroic journey to the northern hemisphere. The lighthouse at Cape Bruny was built between 1836 and 1838 with convict labour. The Bruny Island Ferry Service runs seven days a week and you can check the timetable at (03) 6273 6725.
Southern Design Centre , Geeveston, Tasmania
Southern Design Centre Tours and Attractions The Southern Design Centre is a furniture and craft centre at Geeveston in southern Tasmania. Geeveston is located in the Huon Valley, an hour’s drive southwest of Hobart (71 kilometres), and fifteen minutes from Huonville (14 kilometres).
The Southern Design Centre specialises in designing and making fine timber furniture. Native Tasmanian timbers, including Huon pine, blackheart sassafras, myrtle, blackwood, celery top pine and Tasmanian oak, are used to create hand crafted furniture. You can see examples of Tasmanian timber furniture in the Centre's showroom, and pieces can also be made to order.
The work of local artists and crafts people is also displayed at the Southern Design Centre in an annual program of exhibitions. A range of decorative and functional pieces is on display, in addition to locally grown and made Tasmanian produce.
You can also observe artisans at work in the Centre's studios. The ‘Allsorts’ are a group of local artists, resident at the Centre. You can see the work of a wood turner, potter, textile artist, silversmith, glass artist and batik artist, and even participate in one of the Centre’s regular art and craft workshops.

The Tahune Airwalk is about 90 minutes’ drive or 70 kilometres from Hobart in the Huon Valley.
You can experience walking among the treetops past rare species, some found only in Tasmania, such as King Billy and Celery Top pine, myrtle, beech, blackwood and sassafras. The walkway rises up to 48 metres above the ground and extends for around half a kilometre over the Tahune State Forest and Picton River.
The Visitors Centre has excellent interpretation on the forest and how it is worked; the adjoining restaurant features tasty lunches usingTasmanian local produce.
The area is well known for four wheel driving, rafting, bushwalking and fishing. Its central location also provides a hub from which visitors can experience a range of cultural, heritage and recreational activities in the Huon Valley.
The Air Walk was made in Tasmania and designed to meet the highest safety standards. The steel framework is supported by 12 concrete towers embedded in the forest floor and stabilised by three elastic steel guy cables designed for each tower. The walkway is built to withstand winds up to 180 km.

Established in 1991 on three acres of land overlooking the sea at Glaziers Bay, Tas Saff is now a thriving commercial saffron producer and has developed a network of 40 growers throughout Australia. You can visit Tas Saff by appointment to discover the process of growing fine quality Tasmanian saffron.
Saffron is the name given to the dried, red stigmas of the flower of the Crocus Sativus plant. It is treasured for adding flavour, colour, and aroma to food, and also has medicinal qualities. Growing and harvesting saffron is a labour-intensive undertaking. Each crocus plant produces just one flower, and each flower grows three stigmas. The plant flowers over a 35-day period in autumn and the delicate process of picking, stripping, weighing and packing the filaments is all done by hand. Around 220,000 flowers are needed to produce each kilogram of Australian saffron.

At the Tasmanian Appleheads and Model Village you can explore two model villages. The main village features miniature reproductions of buildings from around the world. Highlights include a large Shoe House, and a model of Australia’s oldest Catholic church - St Johns Church, built in the south-east Tasmanian town of Richmond in 1836 – which features bells, a church organ and even a church choir. A second model village is a quaint, imaginary country town, complete with houses, a pottery, smithy, hotel, turreted castle and four churches, each with their own ringing bells.
A quirky specialty is the souvenir Appleheads – caricature heads of men and women carved from real apples and dehydrated to age them.

Tasmania’s cool climate sets it apart from the rest of Australia as a prime wine-growing region. At Enchanted Woods, in Castle Forbes Bay, you can see a local wood turner crafting Tasmanian specialty timbers, or perhaps visit the Woodfired Pottery studio and workshop at Glen Huon and select a piece of handmade Tasmanian stoneware.

Wooden Boat Centre - Tasmania Tours and Attractions The Wooden Boat Centre is a boat building school at Franklin, in Tasmania’s south. Franklin is an historic Huon Valley town, 40 minutes’ drive south of Hobart (45 kilometres).
Sitting on the banks of the Huon River, the Wooden Boat Centre comprises the Wooden Boat Discovery Centre and Wooden Boat School. In the Discovery Centre you can see displays interpreting the history of wooden boat building and water transport along with maritime tools and artefacts. A number of small vessels are on display and you can also see some of Tasmania’s unique boat building timbers including Huon pine, King Billy pine, celery top and Tasmanian blue gum. There is also a gift shop where you can choose from a range of nautical gifts and Wooden Boat Centre merchandise.
The Wooden Boat School offers boat-building courses ranging in length from one day to full-time certificate courses. The year-long Certificate in Wooden Boat Construction teaches traditional wooden boat-building methods and focuses on the construction of large timber vessels through all stages from lofting to launch. You can watch the students working on current projects from the viewing platforms in the Centre, which is open daily, except Christmas Day.
Woodfired Pottery , Huonville, Tasmania
Woodfired Pottery Tours and Attractions The Woodfired Pottery is a potter’s studio in Glen Huon, in Tasmania’s Huon Valley. Glen Huon is a five-minute drive west of Huonville, and 40 minutes south of Hobart (58 kilometres).
The Woodfired Pottery studio and workshop is located in a converted early-20th century barn, surrounded by gardens and farmland. The potter, John Martin, designs and hand-makes a range of pottery pieces and demonstrates traditional pottery making and firing techniques for visitors. Each piece is finished with natural glazes reflecting the colours of the surrounding environment, and the flame and ash generated in the wood firing process creates a distinctive finish. The Woodfired Pottery produces decorative and functional pieces made from stoneware and porcelain clays.
There are a number of artists and galleries in the Huon Valley and D’Entrecasteaux Channel area. You can visit Studio Karma in Glen Huon - the studio of watercolour artist Terry Choi-Lundberg. The Regnan’s Gallery at Peppermint Bay, near Woodbridge, displays quality Tasmanian art and craft, and at Enchanted Woods at Castle Forbes Bay, you can watch a local wood turner creating fine woodcraft from Tasmanian specialty timbers.
