Apsley Gorge Vineyard , Bicheno, Tasmania
Apsley Gorge Vineyard Tours and Attractions Apsley Gorge Vineyard is near Bicheno, on the east coast, at the entrance to Apsley Gorge. The vineyard has one of the most stunning locations overlooking The Gulch in Bicheno, where the ocean swirls and crashes onto the rocks.
The unique micro climate of this north-east facing valley produces distinctive cool climate wines, medal winning chardonnay and pinot. These wines are aged in French oak.
Apsley Gorge Vineyard’s first vintage was produced in 1993, the winemaker was Andrew Hood who continued to make the wines until 1998. The owner Brian Franklin took over the wine making in 1999.
Apsley Gorge Vineyard itself is not open to the public, but it has a cellar door facility at the Bicheno Winery at The Gulch in Bicheno. Wine tastings and sales are available from November until the new vintage starts, which is usually after the Easter holiday break.
Here you can indulge in more than wine tasting: we have freshly cooked crayfish and local oysters, freshly baked baguettes and gourmet coffee, all to be enjoyed while looking out across the ocean. We also offer a range of products from our local smokehouse and small goods butcher.
Wines are also available by mail order.

Bay of Fires / The Gardens Tours and Attractions Bay of Fires is a picturesque region north of St Helens on Tasmania's northeast coast.
Experience the white beaches, blue water and granite splashed with orange lichen at the bay that was named by Captain Tobias Furneaux in 1773 in response to the many Aboriginal fires he saw burning on its shore. Beach activities and bird-watching are popular in this beautiful reserve or you may even view a pod of dolphins as they cruise along parallel to the beach.
In the conservation area, which is at the southern end and is approached from St Helen, there are camping grounds along a 13-kilometre (eight-mile) section of road that terminates at private land called The Gardens.
From St Helens, take Binalong Bay Road (C850) to the turnoff to the C848, which is signposted to The Gardens.

Established in 1979, Craigie Knowe vineyard has five hectares of vines, producing a range of fine cool climate wines including pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon and some Bordeaux varieties. The vineyard opens by appointment for tastings and sales from their range.
Tasmania has over 200 vineyards, producing more than 6,500 tonnes of grapes per year. While east coast vineyards are generally small, quality remains high. This area is renowned for having the greatest hours of sunlight in Tasmania, with ideal growing conditions producing some of the state’s finest wines. Darlington Vineyard , Orford, Tasmania
Darlington Vineyard Tours and Attractions Darlington Vineyard is a producer of fine cool-climate wines on Tasmania’s east coast. The vineyard is located at Orford, an hour’s drive north of Hobart (81 kilometres / 50 miles).
Darlington Vineyard has 1.5 hectares of vines overlooking the historic Darlington settlement on Maria Island. Darlington’s range of light, delicate wines includes pinot noir, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and riesling. You can visit the vineyard each day during the summer months (December to February) and Friday to Monday from late February to late December. Douglas-Apsley National Park , Bicheno, Tasmania

The beautiful park boasts dry sclerophyll forest and riverside walking tracks, swimming holes, birdlife and Oyster Bay pines. Walks include the 20-minute return stroll to the Apsley Waterhole, the three-hour Apsley Gorge circuit and the three-day north-south bushwalk through the park.
To reach the start of the three-day walk, turn south on the MG forestry road 5 km (3.1 miles) south of St Marys. Root rot (Phytophthora cinnamomii) is a problem in the area, therefore please clean boots and tent pegs before and after visiting the park.
Douglas–Apsley National Park extends over 16,080 hectares (39,735 acres) of land close to the Freycinet Peninsula and quaint towns along the stunning east coast. While you are in the region you can also swim, snorkel or try your hand at deep-sea fishing. Visit coastal wineries and marvel at renowned Wineglass Bay in nearby Freycinet National Park.

East Coast Natureworld , Bicheno, Tasmania
East Coast Natureworld Tours and Attractions East coast Natureworld is a premier wildlife and ecology park near Bicheno, in Tasmania’s east coast.
The park is located on 65 hectares (150 acres) of natural parkland and lagoons, north of bicheno. Here, you can see free-ranging native Australian wildlife up close, including wombats, kangaroos, bettongs, koalas, pademelons, lorikeets, pelicans and swans. Natureworld also operates as a rescue, breeding and rehabilitation sanctuary for orphaned or injured wildlife.
Other features include devilworld, a state of the art, interactive interpretation centre focussing on the Tasmanian devil. You can see over 200 snakes and lizards in reptileworld and witness the after-dark habits of australian native animals at nocturnalworld. Feeding times are at 10:00am and 3:30pm each day.
Check out the newly restored east coast heritage and mining display with an 1850’s mine & rescued mining equipment, whilst learning about coastal history. Natureworld also has a playground, old mcdonalds farm, scenic lookout and walk-through aviaries. Take a scenic flora walk through the forest, or enjoy homemade soup with damper and 'devil cream teas' at the devil’s den restaurant.
Bicheno is a two hour and 15 minute drive (177 kilometres/110 miles) from Hobart.
Freycinet Golf Course , Coles Bay, Tasmania
Situated on the Freycinet Peninsula, 6.5 kilometres west of Coles Bay. A well wooded course with tight driving holes and several man-made lakes. Added to this, the prevailing sea-breezes can make this course quite a challenge. Features views of the Swan River and Oyster Bay.

Freycinet Marine Farm (Attraction) , Coles Bay, Tasmania
Freycinet Marine Farm (Attraction) Tours and Attractions The Freycinet Marine Farm Sales Room is located near Coles Bay on Tasmania’s east coast.
The sales room is open every day from 9am until 5pm, offering freshly harvested mussels, oysters and local Tasmanian Rock lobster for sale. Sit at one of the picnic tables or enjoy lunch on one of the coastal beaches. Tasmanian wine and beer is also available from the sales room.
The farm is made up of six different growing regions totaling just less than 185 acres and is a mixture of estuarine and fully marine growing areas. The estuarine areas are in the Great Swanport river estuary. The marine zones are offshore from the Freycinet National Park and are open to the Southern Ocean to the south.
Cool clean water forms the basis of the farm. The water is pure and therefore so are the oysters. In fact, you can taste the clean waters of Tasmania’s east coast with every oyster that passes your palate. The farm grows Pacific Oysters in the estuarine areas and Tasmanian Blue Mussels in the fully marine areas.
The farm is located 10 kilometres north of Coles Bay, and is a two-and-a-half hour drive from Hobart (200 kilometres/125 miles).
Freycinet National Park , Coles Bay, Tasmania
Freycinet National Park Tours and Attractions Freycinet National Park with its pink granite mountains is a long peninsula jutting out into the Tasman Sea on Tasmania’s east coast. The park is famous for Wineglass Bay, just one of its white sandy beaches and the pure clear turquoise waters that are perfect for sea kayaking, swimming, and scuba diving. The Hazard Range offer climbing abseiling and mountain walking, and the coastal heath lands have wonderful day walks.
Take the short walk to the Wineglass Bay lookout. The American magazine, Outside, rates Wineglass Bay as one of the world’s ten best beaches.
To reach Freycinet, turn off the A3 (East Coast Escape trail) 11 kilometre south of Bicheno and take a good sealed road 27 kilometres south to Coles Bay.
For bird lovers there is the chance to see a white-bellied sea-eagle gliding overhead or large Australasian gannet diving for food in the ocean. In the busy and forested areas you will often see or hear small nectar-feeding birds such as eastern spinebill and yellow-throated, crescent or New Holland honeyeaters. You may also see or hear large yellow-tailed black cockatoos, which often feed and fly in raucous groups. Moulting Lagoon Game Reserve, just outside the park on the Coles Bay road is a wetland of international importance.
For spectacular coastal views visit Cape Tourville lighthouse and take the cliff top walk.
Coles Bay offers a range of accommodation and camping sites are available just inside the park boundary. Because the area is so popular over the Christmas/New Year period there is a ballot system drawn, so please check the Parks and Wildlife site www.parks.tas.gov.au
The Park offers a variety of basic powered and unpowered campsites, some with cold showers. Outside the main summer/Easter period no bookings are taken, but visitors must check at the Visitor/Interpretation Centre.
Freycinet Vineyards Pty Ltd , Bicheno, Tasmania
Freycinet Vineyards Pty Ltd Tours and Attractions Freycinet Vineyard is a family-run vineyard and winery overlooking Tasmania's famed Freycinet National Park.
Established in 1980 by Geoff and Susie Bull, the east coast site was selected for its ideal microclimate – long sunshine hours and lean soils that encourage vines to focus on fruit not foliage. The family tradition of winemaking is continued by their daughter Lindy and her husband Claudio Rodenti.
You will observe the traditional techniques of barrel fermentation and maturation. Tight-grain French oak casks are used and minimal intervention ensures the wines retain their maximum colour and flavour.
You can sample some of the vineyard’s handcrafted wines, including chardonnay, pinot noir, Riesling/schonburger, cabernet sauvignon and the Rodenti sparkling, against the spectacular backdrop of the Freycinet Peninsula. The vineyard is open to the public for tastings seven days a week, 364 days a year. There are no tours of the vineyard.
Freycinet Vineyard is located approximately 15 minutes’ drive (18 kilometres/11 miles) south of Bicheno on Tasmania’s east coast. Bicheno is just over two-hours’ drive from Launceston.

Girraween Gardens and Tearooms Tours and Attractions Girraween Gardens is a private garden and tea rooms at Triabunna on Tasmania’s east coast. Triabunna is a scenic port town, 88 kilometres/55 miles north east of Hobart.
You can visit Girraween to stroll through a hectare (2.5 acres) of beautifully designed gardens. Absorb the heady fragrance of the rose garden, enjoy the massed colour of beds of agapanthus and day lillies, sit by the lily pond or enjoy the beauty of thousands of other flowering plants and shrubs. After strolling through the grounds, you can enjoy a drink and tasty snack in the tea rooms. Girraween Gardens are located in central Triabunna, and are open every day except Christmas Day and Good Friday.
Australia’s first rural municipality, Triabunna was established in the 1820s as a whaling station and garrison town servicing the Maria Island penal colony. Triabunna is an Aboriginal word meaning native hen – a fast-running, flightless bird found only in Tasmania. Many of these birds – which can reach speeds of up to 50 kilometres/31 miles an hour - can be seen foraging near streams and pastureland in the area
Gone Rustic , St Marys, Tasmania
Gone Rustic Tours and Attractions Gone Rustic is a textile art studio and gallery in St. Marys, north east Tasmania. What was an old service station has been renovated to become a showcase for the designs of Canadian-born Rita Summers, an award winning and published textile artist. Textile and fibre art, mixed media, quilts and other handmade items are on display and for sale. Gone Rustic specialises in supporting Tasmanian artisans and their work. Touring exhibitions and guest exhibitors are also featured at various times during the year, and workshops are offered on a regular basis.
You can purchase a unique handmade item onsite at Gone Rustic or buy online from the website. You can even enrol for a workshop! The Studio and Gallery are open 10:00am to 4:00pm Mondays to Fridays (and other times by appointment). When Ian Summers, whose day job is teaching, opens up his display of “old stuff” across the road, you can also see classic cars and collectibles (by appointment only).

Kate's Berry Farm , Swansea, Tasmania
Kate's Berry Farm Tours and Attractions Kate's Berry Farm, just near Swansea, is one of Tasmania's treasures. From spring (November) to Autumn (April) you can buy fresh raspberries and strawberries picked that day from Kate's garden. The Farm sits high above the coastline looking out across Great Oyster Bay to The Hazards range. At any time of the year you can buy luscious creamy ice cream, jams and even wine made from the berries. Kate produces strawberry dry table wine and a strawberry-riesling blend. Kate designed and built her cellar door shop and workshop, works the gardens and volunteers for the local safety patrol, but she is always ready to chat with visitors about her farm and what it means to her.
Malahide Golf Club , Fingal, Tasmania
Malahide Golf Club is a nine-hole course situated in Tasmania's rural north east at Fingal.
The par 72 course is set in beautiful surrounds with grass greens. It follows a gently undulating landscape with few hills. Greens, tees and fairways are carefully watered. It is open all year round and bookings are not necessary with visitors welcome.
Men’s competition is held on Saturday at 11am and Lady’s competition on Wednesday at 11am. The Clubhouse has a bar and snack facilities. There are barbecue facilities also available.
Visit the fascinating old mining villages in the hills around Mathinna nearby. Drive to secluded bush walks in the Douglas-Apsley National Park and pristine silver beaches along the east coast nearby, stopping on the way for the best views and pancakes at the Famous Mt. Elephant Pancake Barn.
Fingal is about one hour and 20-minutes’ drive (108 kilometres/67 miles) from Launceston.
Maria Island National Park , Maria Island, Tasmania
Maria Island National Park Tours and Attractions Maria Island National Park is Tasmania’s only island Park, six kilometres off the state’s east coast. Maria Island is a short ferry ride from Triabunna, 90 minutes north-east of Hobart (88 kilometres/55 miles).
Maria Island National Park has a rich history. Originally inhabited by the indigenous Tyreddeme people, it has also been whaling and sealing post, penal settlement and an Italianate pleasure resort. You can explore the Island on bushwalks including Fossil Cliffs, Painted Cliffs, and the peaks of Mt Maria and Bishop and Clerk. There are no cars here, so mountain biking is also a wonderful way to see the Park.
Basic accommodation includes bunk rooms in the Penitentiary at Darlington - a once-thriving settlement that included a vineyard, coffee palace and Grand Hotel. Camping is also available here and at free sites at French's Farm and Encampment Cove. Abundant wildlife includes Cape Barren geese, kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas and wombats and the Island’s marine reserves are rich with sea life including seahorses, sea dragons, colourful sponge gardens and jewel anemones. From the cliff tops you may also see dolphins, whales, seals and sea eagles.

Mayfield Bay Coastal Reserve , Swansea, Tasmania
Mayfield Bay Coastal Reserve is a conservation area south of Swansea on Tasmania’s east coast. The Reserve is 15 minutes’ drive from Swansea (20 kilometres/12 miles) and 90 minutes north east of Hobart (115 kilometres/71 miles).
Mayfield Bay’s sandy beach and coastal area offers good camping, fishing, swimming, surfing and diving, as well as wonderful views across Great Oyster Bay to Freycinet Peninsula. The reserve has shady trees and toilet facilities but you will need to bring your own drinking water and camping gear. This is a great spot to break your journey along the east coast, unpack a picnic and get out your camera.
A little further north from Mayfield Bay you will find convict-built Spiky Bridge. This unusual looking bridge was built in the 1840s by a convict road gang. The bridge was built from local fieldstone with stones placed vertically along the parapet, giving the bridge its spiky appearance. It has been claimed that the spikes were designed to prevent cattle falling over the sides. There are interpretation signs here which give you some good information about the nearby Rocky Hills Probation Outstation convict ruins.
Orford Golf Club , Orford, Tasmania

Spring Vale Vineyard , Cranbrook, Tasmania
Spring Vale Vineyard Tours and Attractions Spring Vale Vineyards is a small, family-owned winery at Cranbrook, on Tasmania’s east coast. Cranbrook is a 15-minute drive north of Swansea (10 kilometres) and forty-five minutes’ drive from the Freycinet National Park (50 kilometres).
First planted in 1986, the six-hectare (15-acre) vineyard produces pinot noir, gewurztraminer, pinot gris and chardonnay grapes. Spring Vale is known for its intense varietal wines, which reflect the ideal growing conditions of the east coast. The Freycinet region is renowned for having the greatest hours of sunlight in Tasmania, a contributing factor in the intensity and structure of Spring Vale wines. All vineyard operations are carried out by hand, and wines are made on-site.
The winery is owned and operated by the Lyne family; the current winemaker, Kristen Cush (formerly Kristen Lyne), is a fifth-generation resident of the property. Built in 1842, the original Spring Vale homestead is one of the oldest properties on the east coast and has been in the Lyne family since1875.
You can taste Spring Vale’s range of fine wines at the cellar door and sales room, located in the original convict-built stables.

There is a nine-hole golf course open seven days a week to the public. Local community members and visitors can play lawn bowls on the weekends and evenings. The centre is not open full hours daily, although bookings can be arranged for specific activities. There is a bowling rink for lawn bowls, golf clubs can be hired and a catering committee is available. The golf course (par 68) is situated around a football oval, race track and bowls green. The flat and well grassed course provides for easy walking.
While you are in the region, plan a short day trip to the Douglas Apsley National Park. Enjoy a range of excellent bushwalks, sweeping coastlines and towering waterfalls. You can order pancakes at the famous Mt Elephant Pancake Barn nearby. Freycinet National Park and the Bay of Fires are also worth a visit for those who enjoy far-stretching pristine beaches.
St Marys Sports Centre is a one hour and forty-minute drive east of Launceston (129 kilometres/80 miles).

Such Is Life is a gallery and gift shop at Triabunna on Tasmania’s east coast. Triabunna is a scenic port town on Tasmania’s east coast, 88 kilometres/55 miles north east of Hobart.
The Such is Life Gallery specialises in work by local artists, including a permanent exhibition of landscapes, seascapes and contemporary paintings and drawings. The Gallery also showcases crafts by local artisans, including traditional handcrafts, ceramics, handcrafted furniture and shellwork and there is a collection of work by several textile designers, including a range of ready-to-wear art, created using new and recycled fabrics.
You can visit the gift shop to choose from the range of locally produced, handcrafted cards, paper, candles, clothing and jewellery. Browse through high quality vintage goods and uncover treasures including collectable glass and ceramics, clothing and books.
From Triabunna you can see Maria Island National Park. Originally a colonial penal settlement, Maria Island is now a haven for bushwalkers, cyclists and wildlife. Here, you can see historic ruins, sweeping bays, rugged cliffs and mountains, and wildlife including pademelons, Forester kangaroos, Bennetts wallabies and Cape Barren geese.Information on charter services to the Island is available at Triabunna’s Visitor Information Centre (03 6257 4772).
Swansea Bark Mill and Tavern , Swansea, Tasmania
Swansea Bark Mill and Tavern Tours and Attractions The Bark Mill is a restored mill and museum in Swansea on Tasmania’s east coast. The mill is Australia’s only restored Black Wattle Bark Mill, and possibly the only one in the world. The fully working mill demonstrates how bark from local black wattle trees was once crushed for export across the world. The bark is the basic ingredient used in tanning.
The mill was established in 1885 and continued operation until the early 1960s.
A visit here gives a fascinating insight into the ancient art of milling bark. The museum depicts the early history of the oldest rural municipality in Australia. Individual working displays depict life as it was in the 1800s. The descendants of the original settlers have loaned many items and photographs to the exhibition.
The Bark Mill complex is opened daily.
In addition to the Museum is a Tavern and Bakery making this the ideal place for a stop. The tavern and bakery cater for all meals. A large car park, good access for disabled, well appointed rest rooms and children’s playground completes the Bark Mill Tavern, Bakery and Museum complex.
The Bark Mill is one hour 40 minutes’ drive (134 kilometres/84 miles) from Hobart.
Swansea Golf Club , Swansea, Tasmania
Swansea Golf Club Tours and Attractions The Swansea Golf Club is a scenic, nine-hole course on the coast at Swansea. Swansea is 90 minutes north east of Hobart (134 kilometres/83 miles) and south east of Launceston (133 kilometres/82 miles).
This well-maintained course features undulating, tree-lined fairways and small putting greens. The course is right on the coast at Waterloo Point, a short walk from the town centre and the views across Great Oyster Bay to the Freycinet Peninsula are breathtaking. Swansea is a well-supported community course with regular competitions and events. The club has ladies, veterans, juniors, social and members groups and hosts the four-day East Coast Open each Queen’s Birthday long weekend in June. Club hire is available locally and you can enjoy a drink and snack in the club house after your round each Saturday and Wednesday afternoon.

Plaques are fixed to the top of a low brick wall in the shape of the first Christian symbol, a fish, and the wall is surmounted by an anchor cross.

The Triabunna Visitor Information Centre, located on Spring Bay, overlooks the Tasmanian Seafarers’ Memorial Wall, marina and local fishing fleet. Here, you will find information and assistance for local accommodation and touring, as well as Internet access, rest rooms and showers. A feature of the Centre is its collection of tapestry wall hangings. Made by local residents, the tapestries depict the Aboriginal and European history, development and culture of the area – one of Australia’s oldest municipalities.

At the very least it reminds us of our earth’s inspiring beauty and visually challenges us to define the line between our nature and our art.
Wielangta Forest Drive , Orford, Tasmania
An interesting and scenic alternative route between the east coast and the Tasman Peninsula, this 35 km drive links Orford with Bream Creek and Copping, taking a good gravel forestry road through tall eucalypt production forests and passing the Sandspit Forest Reserve on the Sandspit River, with its pockets of relict rainforest. Enjoy a picnic at the Thumbs Lookout just south of Orford or the Sandspit Forest Reserve. There are several lookout points with spectacular views of the coast, islands and ocean. Roadside signage explains how the areas working forests are being managed.
