Visit the Albury Airport 'Uiver' Memorial at Albury Airport. Albury hit world news headlines when in 1934 a participant in the London to Melbourne Centenary Air Race became lost in severe thunder storms in the final leg of the journey. Towards midnight on October 23rd the Dutch Douglas airliner "Uiver" began circling seeking bearings. Corowa radio station 2CO broadcasted appeals to motorists to assemble at Albury Racecourse to light the fields with their headlights. The plane made a perfect landing in torrential rain on the 200 yard "runway".

The next morning 300 spectators gathered to pull out the now bogged plane by ropes so that the plane could continue the race, jettisoning everything to lift off. The plane completed the race, winning handicap section and outright second place in the great air race. The performance of the DC2 in this race and the community’s efforts in saving it cemented a friendship with the Dutch people that saw the establishment of a permanent memorial.

Albury's beautiful Botanic Gardens have been established for over 130 years and give residents and tourists alike the opportunity to see and admire the historical and horticultural significance as well.

Over the years, the gardens have won many prizes for layout, design, plant species and annual planting's. The curved paths and rounded shrub beds give a softer, less formal look to these gardens which once had straight paths and rows of pines, elms and other trees.

Found in the gardens is the Hume Monument, Albury's tribute to Hamilton Hume who first discovered this area in 1824. The Hume monument was erected in 1858 and stood on the former site of Hume's Tree, it was removed to the Botanic Gardens when they were established. The present brick residence was built in 1909 to replace the previous weatherboard house. The Gardens are classified by the National Trust of Australia.

Albury's award-winning Library Museum brings together state-of-the-art technology, a focus on the city's heritage, engaging interactive exhibitions and the reading and research elements of a library.

'Crossing Place: A Story of Albury' is the Library Museum's permanent exhibition, and it tells the story from the first contact with the Wiradjuri, traditional owners of the land, to the City of today.

The Library Museum also has a changing exhibition program, which features touring exhibitions, works from the Albury City Collection and community exhibitions. These diverse exhibitions range from social history to contemporary multimedia.

The Army Museum Bandiana has on display numerous uniforms including WW1, WW2 and present day, 150 weapons including machine guns and pistols and a historic vehicle display of 150 plus military vehicles including bikes, cars, trucks, heavy equipment and armoured vehicles. On the lovely grassed Tocumwal Foreshore Park you'll find the 'World's Biggest Codfish' on display representing what this area is most famous for. The Aboriginal name for the Murray Cod is 'Goodoo'. The"Fish" as it is known locally was originally located at the old swimming pool in 1968 but was later moved to its present location on the foreshore.

The Blowhole is said to be sacred to the Ulupna and Bangaragn Aboriginal Tribes and when the Murray River is low, the "Blowhole" flows and bubbles. It is said that it seems to come alive.

The "Blowhole" is situated on a granite outcrop approximately 11 kilometres north of the town.

Betty Clarke has been collecting dolls as well as creating some herself and has them displayed within themes throughout her home in Jerilderie by the Billabong Creek and accepts visitors to look and enjoy the displays. You will find the Mad Hatter’s tea party and a handmade bride and groom to mention just a few of what can be enjoyed. Do allow almost an hour so you don't miss anything.

This lookout is is situated off East street, Albury looking across Albury Airport and the Table Top Range. Part of the Hume and Hovell Walking Track, the Eastern Hill rotary Lookout also offers fantastic views of the Murray River Flood Plain.

To the east you can see the path of the Murray River outlined by Gum Trees as it travels through Mungabareena Reserve. Further a field, some 12km away, on clear days you may be able to see the waters of the Lake Hume and the Hume Weir Spillway.

A Railway Station on a budget! Finley Station was built with minimumal expenditure and is now being restored with about the same amount of funding. Visit the museum that describes how building a railway line without stone ballast, fences and fancy stations opened up rail travel to rural New South Wales in the 1890s.

Gateway Village houses numerous galleries and retail outlets. It also includes the Gateway Visitor Information Centre. The Gateway Island is set in a natural river environment and features picnic and barbecue areas and abundant birdlife. There are fantastic walking trails and bike paths available including bike hire from the Visitor Information Centre.

The Howlong historic trail consists of 28 locations and is a 13.3 kilometres circuit.

The history of Howlong dates back to 1836 when Major Thomas Mitchell established his camp on the southern bank of the river. Crossing to the northern side he observed gig wheel tracks where white settlers had ventured before. The town was surveyed in its present formation in 1856 with ten streets from east to west and ten streets from north to south, bounded by the Black Swan anabranch of the Murray River.

Centrally located in Howlong's main street, the Howlong Community Resource Centre has a wide variety of things on offer, from local produce on sale to free public internet access and visitor information.

With a wide variety of local and interstate touring guides, maps and flyers, the Howlong Visitor Information and Community Resource Centre has a vast amount of information available for visitors and locals. Ask Nyree or one of the volunteers for help with finding accommodation within the Corowa Shire with her free on line booking service. Many other services are available, just ask.

As a building, 'The Willows' Museum dates back historically to 1878, when it was first built as a residence by the Wise brothers, in conjunction with the construction of a Flour Mill. The Mill itself was a water powered stone grind mill, which operated at 'The Willows' site prior to its relocation to the railway siding in 1885.

Planted on the lawns of 'The Willows' is a native 'Jerilderie Red' tree, which is a cross between an Illawarra Flame tree and a Kurrajong, and is unique to Jerilderie.'

The Willows' is not only a museum but is also the official Visitors Information Centre and a refreshment area. It is set in a delightful leafy surrounding on the banks of the Billabong Creek.

Nearby is the one of the six National Heritage Sites; The Post and Telegraph Office which featured in the raid in Jerilderie by the Ned Kelly Gang in 1879.

The Mini Railway holds running days on the second Sunday of each month and by appointment.

A winner of the NSW Museum of the Year Award and one of the district's first "Folk" museums, Jindera's Pioneer Museum is rated as a world-class attraction.

The Jindera Museum is contained within a remarkable old store and home that belonged to the pioneering Wagner family. The "store" is "stocked with authentic goods of the 19th century, while the living area at the rear is furnished in its original style.

Wagner's Store operated into the 1950s and after it closed, a decision was taken to create the museum. All items were donated by local pioneer families. Sir Russell Drysdale declared the Jindera Museum open in 1968.

The Jindera Pioneer Museum which consists of the store and house, two large galleries, authentically furnished slab hut and wattle daub cottage, a remarkable collection of farm implements and equipment and a 1872 era blacksmith shop all set in two hectares of grounds.

Jones Winery and Vineyard specializes in making premium quality hand-crafted wines. They consider themselves very fortunate to have some amazing old vines, some of which were planted just after the turn of the century before last!

The area has a rich history of gold and farming. Most of the winegrowing properties in the area have been owned and run by the same family for generations. Jones Winery and Vineyard is one of the oldest of these properties and its vineyard was established in the 1860's.

Some fermentation is carried out in the original wooden vats, which were installed in the nineteenth century. They provide a full range of styles - delicate Whites, full-bodied reds and excellent ports and Sherries.

There is a barn built of hand-made bricks which is still a part of the existing winery and the original bark roof still lines the cellar and provides excellent insulation.

The Kinross Woolshed Hotel is a relocated shearing shed with origins dating back to the 1890's when it was the busiest shed in the district. Now it is one of the most popular hotels on the New South Wales/Victorian border.

The monument was designed by architect Louis Harrison in 1923 and erected in 1924 at a cost of 3,000 pounds. In 1925 on Anzac Day the Memorial was dedicated to the men and women who served in World War I (1914-18).

Just below the monument there is a Memorial Bowl to those men and women who served in World War II (1939-45). Western Hill rises 300 feet above Albury and the Obelisk is 100 feet high.

There are a number of walking tracks to and around the site where you can enjoy the sights and sound of our native flora and fauna.

Morris Wines is just off the Murray Valley Highway; with 80 hectares under vines. Locate approximately 16 kilometres east of Rutherglen and 30 kilometres west of Wodonga.

David is the great great grandson of George Morris who planted his first vines in the district (at Fairfield) during 1859, the continuing story of five generations of family winemakers. The present vineyard was established by David's great grandfather, Charles About 1890 and now has varieties such as Muscat, Shiraz, Semillon Cabernet, Durif and Tokay.

Morris Wines are internationally famous for the excellence and uniqueness of its fortified wines such as Tokay, Muscat and Tawny Port, and they have achieved an enviable reputation for the quality of its red and white wines.

Mount Prior has some 109 acres under vine. The property was established in 1859 operating as a winery from about 1860 through to 1912 when the winery was destroyed by fire. This was reconstructed in 1981 after 69 years absence from the Rutherglen winemaking fraternity.

The winery produces premium table wines from the varieties planted, the majority of which are Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Shiraz, Meriot, Durif, Semillon Cabernet Sauvignon and a few more.

The magnificent homestead was built in 1882 and restored to its original splendour in 1979 and has recently been developed into a weekend retreat which has accommodation for only 6 couples. Elegance, a relaxed atmosphere, exquisite cuisine and fine wines are all part of what is incorporated in a stay at the homestead. Dinner parties, business meetings (or conventions for small groups of 15-20 people), product launches are catered for also. Bookings are essential. Mungabareena reserve is an important cultural reserve that has significance to many Aboriginal tribes in this region. It is where Aboriginal peoples from different tribes meet to trade before continuing towards Mt Bogong to hunt for Bogong moths. The Ngan Girra festival is held here every November.

The 'Waterworks' area is further along from Mungabareena, and is also a popular spot for recreation on the Murray at Albury.There are many other recreational areas along the banks of the Murray and chances are you’ll find your own pristine river beach to enjoy. Wildlife abounds from this life giving water source, you could spot a platypus scrabbling for yabbies in the shallows near the river bank, watch as wood ducks wade through the water or see a rainbow bee-eater perform aerial feats in the hunt for its insect dinner! Step back in time and experience a taste of yesteryear, hear an eye witness account of the raid on Jerilderie New South Wales by Ned Kelly and his gang, soak up the nostalgia of standing where the gang’s horses were shod in 'The Ned Kelly Blacksmith Shop'.

The Blacksmith Shop is located within the Powell Street heritage precinct and is part of the National Ned Kelly Touring Route.

Eagles, dingoes, water birds, possums, lizards, parrots, wombats and wallabies are only some of the birds and animals sheltered by this wildlife sanctuary near Albury.

Kangaroos and wallabies roam freely around the grounds, as do the gloriously coloured peacocks, native parrots and the wedge-tail eagles are housed individually in spacious enclosures. The large man-made lake attracts numerous water-birds including the rare cape barren geese.

OZ e Wildlife serves an important function in the nursing and rehabilitation of hurt native animals and birds.

Visitors are welcome to picnic in OZ e Wildlife or relax in the kiosk and restaurant. Conducted educational tours can be arranged for groups of young and old prior arrangement.

P.S. Canberra was built in 1912 in Goolwa South Australia. She now offers one hour cruises on the Murray river in Echuca/Moama. She is powered by a 1908 steam engine and is family friendly with all children able to steer the vessel and will receive an official captain certificate.

For the steam enthusiast this is a must. Canberra has a long and varied history whilst currently she has been providing day cruises in the Echuca area for over 40 years.

The Peppin Heritage Centre, which incorporates the Visitor Information Centre is an ideal starting point when you arrive in Deniliquin. The building was Deniliquin's first public school and has now been transformed into a regional museum and in addition to its permanent exhibitions the Centre hosts a variety of travelling exhibitions each year.

The museum is dedicated to the Peppin family who in the 1800s developed a Merino sheep that could withstand and thrive in the harsh Australian conditions. Bridges are not just functional, they can also be scenic and engineering attractions. Spare a few minutes to admire Swan Hill-Murray River Road Bridge.

The Murray River is host to the world's largest river red gum forest. Equally, the area could be called a wetland as much of it is frequently flooded. Straddling the New South Wales and Victorian sides of the Murray, the forest extends from Echuca in the west to Strathmerton in the east, encompassing the Barmah and Millewa forests. The river red gum forests are home to endangered birds such as the regent and superb parrots, as well as carpet pythons, brolgas, squirrel gliders, bats and owls.

Things to do include;
* Take the 60 km (two hour) self-drive tour to sites of historical interest in the Forest, including the Muster Yard, Punt Paddock Lagoon, Cornalla Landing and Green Engine.
* Learn more about the Aboriginal people and their culture at the Dharnya Centre, open from 10.30am - 4.00pm every day except Christmas Day, Good Friday and NAIDOC day (National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee).
* Follow the walking tracks, varying in length from four to seven km, signposted near the Dharnya Centre. Walking is most enjoyable on cool, sunny days, but tracks in the forest can be impassable after rain.
* See 500-year-old river red gums in Barmah Forest.
* Try canoeing or fishing on the Murray River.

There are developed picnic and camping grounds with toilets, barbecues and picnic tables at Barmah Lakes and Ulupna Beach. Bush camping is permitted elsewhere.

The best times to visit are late spring, summer and early autumn. Visit the Tourist Information Centre in Echuca/Moama for information on river tours.
