The Mosque's alcove points toward Mecca, and prayer rugs have been left by worshippers in appreciation of the Mosque.

Australian Inland Botanic Gardens , Buronga, New South Wales
Australian Inland Botanic Gardens Tours and Attractions The original idea of creating botanic garden came from scientists working with the Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) at Merbein. In 1983 a $10,000 grant from the Elliot bequest enabled a committee to engage the services of John Wrigley OPA B.Sc. FAIPR, recognised as one of Australia's best authorities on botanic gardens, to develop a master plan and make recommendations.

It took 5 years to select the site, acquire land, and obtain Government approvals and to raise money. $200,000 was raised initially from local support.

Planting commenced in 1991. Unlike most botanic gardens, the AIBG is an incorporated body administered by a committee of management. Contributions from individuals, service clubs, state and local government's grants generate funds.

In total the property consists of 2 parcels of land.
1. 42.3 hectares on the banks of the Murray River from which the garden's electric pump draws water to irrigate planted areas using computerised drip irrigation.

2. 110 hectares of undulating red loam over clay base, fertile soil on which was formally a sheep station. This area is divided into 2 almost equal parts of which the eastern half is currently under development as Stage One.
Exotic plantings are grouped in beds by country of origin. An area is reserved for plantings of Australian natives from both arid and higher rainfall areas. The Gardens also feature a magnificent Rose Garden consisting of 1600 colour coordinated plants.

Walking tracks are throughout the gardens - other features include a Saltwatch program, Nature Trail, Self-guided walks, and a Bush Chapel.

The Magenta in the Gardens (historic shearing shed) is available to hire for functions ie wedding receptions, conferences, celebrations.

The Sunraysia Farmers Market is held at the gardens on the first and third Saturday of every month from 8am til 12.30pm. No entrance fee - donations welcome.

Wentworth in the South, taking in Broken Hill, Lake Mungo, Kinchega and Mount Gundabooka National Parks which are just astonishing, and classic outback
towns like Wilcannia, Menindee, Pooncarrie, Tilpa and Louth.

the steps of explorers Sturt, Mitchell, Dowling, Burke and Wills and the history and heritage of the run are matched by the vastness of the landscape.

The historic highlights are partly man made, as in the mines of Broken Hill and White Cliffs, partly born in the Aboriginal cultural and spiritual sites and partly
just the land itself. Unique places such as the 'Walls of China' geological formation at Lake Mungo in the World Heritage listed Willandra Lakes area are
simply stunning. Nature lovers will find plenty of wildlife through the region and a bird watching tour of the vast Menindee Lakes system is recommended.

Many of the men were suffering from scurvy. By the time the rains finally came in July, James Poole, Sturt's second in command was very ill. He died just a few days after the expedition broke camp to continue their search for an inland sea. Poole's body was buried beneath a beefwood tree not far from their campsite at Depot Glen.

Depot Glen, Poole's grave, and a cairn built by the men during their encampment form part of a privately owned sheep station known as Mt Poole. Fergie Memorial Statue , Wentworth, New South Wales
Fergie Memorial Statue Tours and Attractions The ’little grey’ Ferguson tractor wrote itself into the annals of local history through the integral part it played in saving Wentworth fron the 1956 floods.

Flood waters raced towards Wentworth via both the Darling and Murray rivers, resulting in a third of Wentworth going under water. Wentworth became an island in an inland sea.

The tenacious will of the Wentworth people saw them stay and fight to save their town from ruin when all authorities were urging them to evacuate. Media at the time were particularly harsh towards those staying put. Terms such as ’madness’, ’sheer folly’ and ’mock bravery and madness’ were reported.

The small Ferguson tractors were prevalent in the area at the time and prove superior to other machinery as they were light, manoeuverable, coped well with the sticky, slippery clay of the levee banks and posed little danger of collapsing them.

During the floods the roar of the little Fergies could be heard 24 hours a day as volunteers patched and built crumbling and new levee banks to fortify Wentworth from the rising waters.

Once the floods began receeding, people were so exhuberant in regards to their success that one fellow drove his Fergie tractor into the local hotel (with the front wheels reaching the bar) and celebratory drinks were had all around.

An earlier monument to the town-saving Fergies was erected at the corner of Adelaide and Darling Streets in Wentworth in 1959 and still remains there to this day. This earlier cairn is the world’s first monument to a tractor and is worth visiting also.

Julie Hart Gallery , Broken Hill, New South Wales
Julie Hart has fast become recognised as a vibrant young landscape artist, with unlimited potential in her field, who is not only able to create and capture a surreal depth of image, but also a perception of movement in her paintings, that many dream of, but few ever attain.

Julie carries the prestige of the Hart name, but as yet not the price and this creates an excellent point at which to start a serious art collection, or add to the credibility of an existing collection. Perceived by many to be the one to carry her fathers mantle (although not as prolific as Pro) this makes her work attractive to both art lovers and investors alike. Over the last several years, demand has doubled for Julie's work due to the ascetic appeal of her paintings and in part to the free and honest approach she has taken to her painting.
Junction Island Nature Reserve and Canoe Tree , Wentworth, New South Wales
Junction Island Nature Reserve and Canoe Tree Tours and Attractions Junction Island Nature Reserve ... The shoal of land between the Darling and Murray Rivers.

Junction Island is the shoal of land between the Darling and Murray Rivers. The junction sandbar is where a large number of aborigines, armed with spears and weapons, threatened Captain Sturt as he sailed down the Murray on his expedition to find the inland sea, and here he had arrived at the Darling junction. Luckily the aboriginals were calmed down by four aboriginals from across the river whom Sturt had befriended earlier and therefore the ’intruders’ presence was accepted.

A canoe tree is also located along the trail that leads to the point. Flora, fauna, wildlife and birdlife abound within this island reserve.

Canoe Tree ... The first methods of river transport.

To make a canoe, the aborigines would first make an outline of the shape they required with cutting stones or stone tools. Once the shape was mastered, they cut deeply into the tree to the heartwood (or xylem), prying the bark off in one piece with stick or rocks.

To make a canoe, the ends of the bark were then curled up and pushed together. Some were made watertight by the addition of clay and grass in any leaky areas.

True canoe trees rarely have the scar extending to the base of the trunk.
Lake Victoria , Wentworth, New South Wales
Fascinating Aboriginal and military history paired with modern day water activitie.

Lake Victoria is a fascinating place that embodies both Aboriginal and military history in addition to being a major water source for people in New South Wales, Victoria and other major towns and cities throughout South Australia.

In 1994 when the lake level was lowered for maintenance, a wealth of Aboriginal history was discovered. Artefacts such as camp sites, stone tools, grindstones, shell middens and hearths etc along with extensive aboriginal burial sites were uncovered. It was estimated that up to three or four thousand individual graves existed in the large burial grounds.

The significant number of remains provided evidence that dense populations of Aboriginal people had lived around the lake for many thousands of years.

During World War 2, Lake Victoria was used as a training ground for the RAAF’s 2 Operational Training Unit. 6 fatalities resulted from these activities and to this day two airmen and their aircraft remain missing in the lake bed.

For visitors to Lake Victoria there is a viewing point from which to overlook the magnificent lake.

Lock 10 and Weir , Wentworth, New South Wales
Lock 10 and Weir Tours and Attractions Enjoy a pleasant lunch by the water.

The weir and lock were completed in 1929. The purpose of the weir is both to maintain a high level of water for irrigation in times of little and to regulate water flow. The lock enables boats to pass from the upper stream to the downstream level of the Murray River and vice versa.

To allow the migration of fish species upstream past the weir at anytime, special ’fishways’ have been built at the abutments of Lock 10. A series of interconnected pools allow the fish to move from pool to pool as part of their upstream travel. This is an important step in the long term recovery of the River Murray ecology.

For visitors to the weir and lock area, numerous picnic tables are available for a pleasant lunch by the water with barbeques across the road for those preferring to cook their own.

Rufus River , Wentworth, New South Wales
Rufus River

On August 27th 1841, the Rufus River was witness to the death of what is said to be 35 people and injury to a further 16 in what became known as the Rufus River massacre.

The first white man to encounter the Aborigines of the area was Charles Sturt as he and his crew rowed down the Murray in 1930. It was Sturt also who named the Rufus River - apparently in honour of his ’friend McLeahy’s red head’.

Sturt proved to be the first of what became quite an influx of European traffic in the form of the ’overlanders’ - moving herds of sheep and cattle along the Murray from the eastern colonies to South Australia.

This movement disturbed the Aboriginal peoples pattern of life - and many conflicts between the two cultures arose, culminating in the massacre of 1841.

Although the intrusion of the overlanders and their violence formed the provocation for the attacks, most were initiated by the Aborigines. They displayed their resistance by strategically ambushing the Europeans while shepherding their animals across river crossings.

For modern day visitors to the Lake Victoria/ Rufus River area, there are two areas at which camping is permitted. At the Rufus River campsite (near Lake Victoria), water, shade and toilets are provided. The Murray River site is ’bush camping’ only.

Two Up School , Broken Hill, New South Wales
Two Up - The Great Australian Game. The game of two-up is as old as European settlement of Australia. Two Up's origins are rather obscure. Some claim it was invented by the Teutons as the alternative name of 'Zwei' is the German word for two. A game of 'chuck the farthing' was popular with convicts at Circular Quay, Sydney during the early 1790's. However Two Up's fame really spread during World War One when Australian soldiers in France would spend their spare time gambling on the toss of two pennies. Even today games of Two Up are played around Australia on Anzac Day (25 April), with police turning a blind eye to illegal gambling on this one day of the year.

Two Up has been part of Broken Hill life for many years. For more than 60 years the illegal Two Up school
was conducted behind a large green door in Crystal Lane at the rear of a 'Greasy Spoon' cafe. Two Up today
is held at the Musicians Club. Played in the traditional manner, with one exception, women are allowed to
play.

Wentworth Wharf Tours and Attractions Originally built in 1879.

The wharf was originally built in 1879 using local timber and was a major landmark of the town - a hive of industry. Throughout the riverboat era Wentworth was the busiest inland port within NSW (third busiest port after Sydney & Newcastle). During one week 31 steamers were docked at the wharf.

The original wharf deteriorated and was demolished in 1983. This similar replica (including the little customes office) now stands in its place.
