It receives waves averaging 1.4 metre which result in two strong permanent rips against the rocks at each end. Thirroul Beach
,
Thirroul,
New South Wales

Thirroul Beach is one kilometre in length and faces east so it picks up swell from most directions. There’s little wind protection at either end, although big southerly swells or southerly winds get slowed up somewhat by the Sandon Point headland. Thirroul’s beach breaks are at their best on a north-northeast swell, which will turn out either a punchy bowl shape or a long open wall, depending on the way the sandbanks are set up. There are usually three peaks to choose from when the northerly swell is running, but once it gets over one metre they’re suitable for intermediate to experienced surfers only. Thirroul is patrolled by Thirroul Surf Lifesaving Club and Wollongong Council lifeguards during summer and there’s a saltwater pool that’s great for a swim and super-safe as it has its own lifeguard. Free gas barbeques, picnic shelters and a large open grassed area right behind the beach make it especially family-friendly.

,
Werri Beach,
New South Wales
Werri is distinguished by having point breaks at both ends of the beach, so there’s often a nice wave peeling nicely off either the north or south headland. Smooth even when the summer nor’easter is blowing, the north point starts to break across the rocky reef that extends from the headland, then generates a fatter wave closer to shore that’s beloved of long-boarders. Beach breaks to the south are dependent on variable sandbanks, but there’s often a decent wave right in front of the famous Werri Beach Fish Shop three-quarters of the way down the beach. The south headland is the spot in a southerly swell and wind. The entry here is easy as hopping off the rocks, but as a result surfers of varying abilities may be out, causing a surfboard traffic jam. The town of Gerringong is one of the south coast’s loveliest, and accommodation options include motels, bed and breakfasts, a beachside campground and a YHA backpackers
