We keep harping on about NZ's snowfields, but with a strong Aussie dollar and plenty of snowfall around the Queenstown / Wanaka area, it's perfect conditions for snowplay that won't cost a motza!
Queenstown is our pick for singles because of its activities on and off the slopes. It's a versatile area with three major ski fields within easy reach. Off mountain, there's a broad selection of watering holes and eateries. Try Winnies for sensational pizza, The Bunker for a night of sophistication, Fergburger for a quick bite, and Dux de Lux for a delicious local brew. On your day off the mountain, try the Shotover Canyon Swing. As one punter phrased his experience "even my sh*t was scared!"
Wanaka is the quieter cousin, more suited to families and low key couples. Its closest resort, Treble Cone, has breathtaking views across Lake Wanaka and Mt Aspiring. Check out the Botswana Butchery for a mountain of fine meats or slurp down a spag bol at The Cow. Drink your way through the cocktail list at Barluga or perch yourself at Woody's bar next door. On your day of rest, take the family to Stuart Landsborough's Puzzling World. The Great Maze should keep the kids occupied for an hour or two.
