It's a tough gig hosting the Olympics, just ask Beijing. By its very nature, the Olympics is the world's largest display of competition, and not just on an athletic level. Think of the all the boycotts and scandals over the years. But amid the jostling of nationalism, commercialism, politics and sporting prowess lies its host, Beijing, an amazing city of contrasts and culture. Beijing is a sprawling urban jungle with huge green spaces and gleaming glass buildings cramming the skies. Ancient dwellings and modern architectural feats sit side by side. Old and new cultures mix comfortably. It's worth immersing yourself in the fascinating landscape and rich history of China: the Great Wall (see right for more information), the Summer Palace, Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Temple of Heaven, Lama Temple, Ming Tombs, Hutong Tours, Peking Duck Banquets and Chinese Acrobats... and that's just Beijing! If you're heading over there include Shanghai and Xi'an, and time permitting a Yangtze River Cruise, train trip to Mongolia, shopping in Hong Kong or side trip to Pingyao, in your itinerary. Oh, and if you happen to like sport, then allow yourself to be swept up in the hype and fervour of the Beijing Olympics from 8-24 August 2008. You won't be disappointed.
