 Belize History
Belize was controlled by the British after defeating the Spanish on 10th September 1798 in the battle of St George's Caye. Belize became an independent nation on 21 September 1981 and has a population of around 280,000. Both the 10th and 21st of September are national holidays in Belize. Belize is bordered to the north by Mexico, west and south by Guatemala and the Caribbean sea on the east.
Belize Attractions
Belize has the second largest barrier reef in the world, second to the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Cairns in Queensland Australia. The reef in Belize has the advantage of being much closer to the mainland than the Great Barrier Reef and the time to get to the reef is only 5-10 minutes (2/3 mile) compared to 30-35 minutes in Queensland. Due to the reef and abundant marine life diving, fishing and snorkeling are fantastic to do in Belize.
Scuba dive the Blue Hole which is part of the Lighthouse Reef system located approximately 60 miles from Belize City. In the middle of Lighthouse reef is a 400m wide 145m deep limestone sink hole that is home to Bull, Reef and Hammer Head sharks.
Belize has many Mayan ruins including Lamanai in the north, Lubaantun (700-900 AD) in the south and Tikal in Flores, Guatemala is just over the border from Belize to the west.
Belize wildlife includes the Tapir, the Macaw and Baboon. The national animal of Belize is the Tapir, related to the horse and rhinoceros. See the back of a Belize $20 note to see a variety of animals native to the Belize jungle.
 Belize Climate
Belize has a subtropical climate with temperatures from 15 to 35 degrees Celsius (60 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit) and 50-120 inches of rain per year.
Belize Currency and Sales Tax
The currency of Belize is the Belize dollar, with one Belize dollar equaling around half of one US dollar or put another way US$1 = BZ$2. Belize currency has the Queen of England on one side indicating the historic connection with the British and current connection with the Commonwealth. The sales tax in Belize as at 2007 is 10%, prices are often listed including sales tax. When making any purchases be careful to verify if sales tax is or is not included and if prices are in $USD or $BZD.
