About Hamilton Island in the Whitsunday's
There are basically two ways to fly into the Whitsunday's Islands, you can fly direct to Hamilton Island or fly into Proserpine, transfer to Airlie Beach and catch a ferry. Fantasea Ferries run a regular service from Shute Harbour (near Airlie beach) to Hamilton Island for around $40 for an Adult one way. Jetstar and VirginBlue fly direct to Hamilton Island from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
Catseye beach on Hamilton Island has the larger multistory resorts including the Reef View, on the west side of the island there is the marina, shops and residential style apartments and villas. Transport on Hamilton island is by walking or golf buggy (excluding working vehicles such buses and trucks used in development on the island), buggy hire is typically around AUD$80 per day. Although the island is only about 6km long it's worth getting a buggy if you want to get around.
There is a walking trail on Hamilton Island across to Escape Beach on the east side this has great views across to other islands. There is currently land for sale on Hamilton Island just down to the west side of One Tree Hill which is a gorgeous spot for cocktails at sunset.
The only thing that may disturb your peaceful island holiday is the weather, on an island if the weather is bad there is nowhere to hide! The Whitsunday's can experience quite windy conditions from the South East, also in Summer no swimming is allowed in the ocean without a 'stinger' suit due to the dangerous box jellyfish. The Irukandji box jellyfish is deadly, is the size of your fingernail and virtually invisible in the water.
Day Dream Island is about 15 minutes on the ferry from Hamilton Island. Day Dream Island is a resort only Island and about 1.5 km long so you can walk around it in no time. Hamilton Island has the resorts and it's own 'village' with general store, bottle shop and several great restaurants.
