Ayutthaya is one of Thailand's most visited cities and is around 80 km from the country's capital, Bangkok. Ayutthaya was the capital of Thailand for four centuries and was even the trading capital of Asia. There are only a few remnants of the ancient city's splendour and grandness today. Because of the ruins in the form of temples, monasteries, and palaces, the city was declared a UNESCO Heritage Site in 1991. Most of these ruins are found in the north-western part of the city.
